Someone just shared their 100-hour vibe coding journey. The punchline? The working prototype took one hour.

The other 99 were spent making it not embarrassing.

This is the dirty secret that nobody posting "I built an app in 30 minutes" wants to talk about.


The One-Hour Illusion ⏱ïļ

No, here's what actually happens. You open Cursor or Claude Code, describe your app, and boom — working prototype in under an hour.

Screenshots look great. The demo works. You tweet about it.

Then you try to ship it.

The colors are wrong. The UI is overengineered. Error handling doesn't exist. There are no tests.

The AI fabricated data when an API call failed instead of throwing an error.

According to a Hashnode report, AI co-authored code contains 1.7x more major issues than human-written code. And 45% of AI-generated samples contain OWASP Top-10 vulnerabilities.

That "working" prototype was never working. It was performing.


The 90/10 Trap ðŸŠĪ

Devs have known about the 90/10 rule forever. The first 90% of the code takes 90% of the time.

The last 10% takes the other 90%.

Vibe coding made the first 90% instant. But it did nothing for the last 10%.

If anything, it made it worse.

A security firm tested five popular AI coding tools by building 15 identical apps. They found 69 vulnerabilities. Six were critical.

When 63% of developers say they spend more time debugging AI-generated code than it would've taken to write it themselves, the "productivity boost" narrative starts looking shaky.


Why the Gap Keeps Growing 📈

The numbers are wild. 41% of all code is now AI-generated globally. Karpathy himself went from writing 80% of his code manually to having AI handle 80% — in three months.

But here's the thing. Karpathy also warned about a "slopocalypse" — a flood of almost-right-but-not-quite code and content everywhere.

25% of YC W25 startups have codebases that are 95%+ AI-generated. That's not a flex. That's a ticking time bomb for whoever has to maintain it in 18 months.

Code churn is up 41%. Code duplication is 4x higher than before. These aren't just numbers — they're future debugging sessions at 2am.


What Actually Works 🔧

I'm not anti-vibe-coding. I use AI for probably 60-70% of my code at this point.

But I treat every AI output like a pull request from an enthusiastic but careless junior dev.

You review it. You test it. You understand it before you merge it.

The people shipping real products with AI aren't the ones tweeting "built this in 30 minutes."

They're the ones who spent 30 minutes generating and 30 hours hardening.

The uncomfortable truth is that AI made the easy parts easier and didn't touch the hard parts at all.

So next time someone shows you a vibecoded app and asks "why do we even need developers?" — ask them to open the error logs.
