Every game on YiBoard, Gomoku first and Xiangqi and Go on the way, is free forever. That is not a traffic trick. It is a design decision: we chose to define a product category with free, rather than use free as bait and monetize after. Here is the philosophy, and the cost discipline that makes it sustainable.
Free as a product philosophy
The real model behind most free games is: free to attract, pay to unlock. Time, features, vanity, all sellable. YiBoard runs the other way: the core experience is free forever, no ads, no paywall, no energy bars. Free gomoku no ads is not a feature, it is a commitment. You come to play, and you play, not to be counted and monetized.
Why dare we do this? Board games have a natural advantage: the value of a match does not drop as the community grows, it rises with community quality. Free brings a bigger community, faster matchmaking, stronger opponents. Those are the reasons players stay.
We chose free over not-free
Paid chess platforms sell analysis, coaches, unlimited practice. Our call was that letting the world play Chinese board games without any barrier matters more than the first dollar. No paywall chess means a student in Brazil and a grandfather in Beijing can face each other in the same free lobby. That connection is the product.
Free also means discipline: we must keep costs down. A browser-local AI engine, no-login matches, decentralized record storage. Those are not just technical choices, they are the prerequisites of sustainable free.
How we stay alive (honest version)
- Completely free: core matches, AI opponents, leaderboards, all open
- Future optional payments: only where players genuinely want them (higher AI strength, commemorative badges, tournament entry)
- Ads? No. Ads would wreck the match experience and contradict the whole point
This model depends on players actually finding it worth it. So every ounce of development goes into the board experience, not the monetization path.
Three tests for a free product
- Is there a hidden paywall? There should not be. What you see free is free.
- Do ads interrupt the core loop? They should not. The play page should have zero ad slots.
- How much worse is the "free version"? There should be no paid version to compare against.
