The DTC Brand AI Reputation Report: 12 Consumer Brands Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity & Claude

Published: geo.atlas1m.com | Free brand check: no signup required

We ran AI brand checks on 12 of the most recognizable DTC (direct-to-consumer) brands and found something unexpected: the same brand can score 100/100 on one AI engine and 17/100 on another.

This isn't a data error. It's the story of how different AI engines remember brands differently — and why it matters for every marketer, SEO consultant, and brand manager in 2026.

The Scorecard

We checked each brand across four AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. Each engine scores 0-100 based on how it describes the brand when asked directly. Scores above 80 indicate positive brand presence; below 50 is concerning.

Brand Overall ChatGPT Gemini Perplexity Claude
Vuori 100 100 100 100 100
Bombas 97 100 100 88 100
Brooklinen 96 100 100 100 83
Warby Parker 95 88 100 100 90
Outdoor Voices 89 90 88 88 90
Allbirds 88 100 100 50 100
Dollar Shave Club 85 90 100 50 100
Purple 85 100 88 100 50
Casper 84 100 86 100 50
Everlane 83 100 83 100 50
Away 72 88 50 100 50
Glossier 67 100 50 100 17

The Three Patterns

Pattern 1: Claude Has a Long Memory for Controversy

Claude scored brands with significant historical controversy notably lower than other engines:

  • Glossier: 17/100 — Despite scoring 100 on ChatGPT and Perplexity, Claude scores Glossier 17/100 with negative sentiment. The 2022-23 period brought mass layoffs, retail closures, and multiple reports of a toxic work culture. Claude's training data weights authoritative third-party sources heavily — and that negative press is locked in.
  • Away: 50/100 — The luggage brand had a well-documented CEO controversy in 2019-2020 (Steph Korey's Slack management issues, multiple resignations). Three years later, Claude still hasn't moved on.
  • Everlane: 50/100 — Known for "radical transparency," Everlane faced backlash over COVID-era layoffs and subsequent workplace culture reports. Claude scores it neutral.
  • Casper: 50/100 — The mattress brand went public at a $575M valuation, watched its stock collapse, then went private at $82M. The narrative of a failed IPO persists in authoritative sources.

What this means: Claude essentially asks "what does the credible internet say about this brand?" Self-published content and recent positive signals don't move it much. If you had a rough public chapter, Claude still knows.

Pattern 2: Perplexity Is the Leading Indicator

Perplexity uses live web retrieval — it's the only engine not frozen in training data. Its scores often reveal where a brand's reputation is heading before other engines notice.

  • Allbirds: 50/100 on Perplexity — While ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude all score Allbirds 100, Perplexity has downgraded them to 50/neutral. The revenue challenges, stock struggles, and layoffs that have defined Allbirds' recent trajectory are showing up in live web data.
  • Dollar Shave Club: 50/100 on Perplexity — DSC was acquired by Unilever in 2016. Management bought it back in 2023. The live web is still processing that transition — Perplexity reflects the uncertainty.

What this means: If your Perplexity score is dropping while other engines hold steady, you have a current-web problem. New negative coverage is accumulating. The fix is different from a historical narrative problem.

Pattern 3: Gemini Has Embedded Positioning

We've seen this pattern consistently across 100+ brand checks: Gemini occasionally scores brands lower when they sit outside the Google ecosystem or compete with Google products.

  • Away: 50/100 on Gemini — Hard to explain technically, but Away competes in a space Google could theoretically enter (travel accessories + loyalty). Gemini is neutral.
  • Glossier: 50/100 on Gemini — The beauty brand has no Google ecosystem dependency, and Gemini's neutral score reflects something beyond just controversy.

Compare this to Zapier (96/100 overall, but Gemini: 83) and WooCommerce (86/100 overall, Gemini: 50) — both tools that operate independently of Google's ecosystem.

This isn't conspiracy — it's training data. The sources Google's AI trains on likely have different representation of brands depending on their relationship to Google products.

The Outliers Worth Examining

Vuori: Perfect Score

100/100 across all four engines. Vuori is a premium activewear brand that has avoided all the traps: no major controversy, no acquisition drama, strong category positioning, and consistent media coverage. This is what clean AI reputation looks like.

Bombas: 97/100

The sock company with the "buy one, donate one" model scores near-perfect everywhere. Social missions create positive, high-volume coverage that AI engines love.

Brooklinen: 96/100

The DTC bedding brand has maintained consistent positioning and no significant negative press. Claude gives it 83 (slight dip from the 100 of other engines) — likely due to some minor customer service discussions in authoritative channels.

What To Do With This

If your Claude score is 50 or below:
You have a historical narrative problem. The fix is long-term: quality editorial coverage from authoritative sources that tells the updated story. Press releases don't move Claude. Real journalism does.

If your Perplexity score is dropping:
You have a current-web problem. New content, new press, new community presence — something that the live web is indexing right now. Act fast; Perplexity is the leading indicator.

If your Gemini score is lagging:
Check for Google ecosystem dependency or competition. There may not be much to fix — but knowing this helps you calibrate expectations for voice search (Google Assistant/Gemini) versus other AI tools.

If your ChatGPT score is high but everything else is low:
ChatGPT often shows the most generous score because it's trained on a broad snapshot that includes a brand's peak positive coverage. Don't rely on it as your benchmark.
