Moving Gemini 3.x Code to Gemini 4 Argon: Failure Modes and Fixes

Gemini 4 Argon has been generally available since October 13, 2026 as gemini-4-argon on the paid Gemini API, Vertex AI and AIHubMix, where it's listed at $2 input / $10 output / $0.10 cached per million tokens, the same as Google's introductory rate until November 30. Google's rate doubles to $4/$20 on December 1. [TBD: AIHubMix price from December 1]

Pointing your Gemini 3.x code at it takes one environment variable. The engineering problem is everything after that. Google's What's new in Gemini 4 Argon page lists the migration steps, and most of them change behavior silently: sampling parameters are ignored, explicit caching is gone, the default thinking level moves, and a low output cap returns empty answers you still pay for. This post gives you a wrapper with the right defaults, then walks through eleven failure modes in the order a request hits them, each with a fix.

Prerequisites

  • An AIHubMix API key in AIHUBMIX_API_KEY, or a paid Gemini API key if you call Google directly (Argon isn't on the free tier). The AIHubMix quick start covers getting a key.
  • The openai Python SDK. The sample uses AIHubMix's OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://aihubmix.com/v1.
  • Code that calls Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview or Gemini 3.8 Flash today.

The wrapper: Argon defaults, with a fallback

The wrapper calls gemini-4-argon by default and falls through to gemini-3.8-flash if Argon is missing, rate-limited or unreachable.

import os
from openai import (OpenAI, APIConnectionError, InternalServerError,
                    NotFoundError, RateLimitError)

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://aihubmix.com/v1",
    api_key=os.environ["AIHUBMIX_API_KEY"],
    timeout=900, # hard prompts can take several minutes
)

PRIMARY = os.environ.get("ARGON_MODEL_ID", "gemini-4-argon")
FALLBACK = "gemini-3.8-flash"
RETRYABLE = (NotFoundError, RateLimitError, InternalServerError, APIConnectionError)

def ask(messages, **kwargs):
    last_error = None
    for model in (PRIMARY, FALLBACK):
        try:
            return client.chat.completions.create(model=model, messages=messages, **kwargs)
        except RETRYABLE as e: # missing, overloaded or unreachable: try the next model
            last_error = e
    raise RuntimeError("No configured model answered") from last_error

resp = ask(
    [{"role": "user", "content": "Reply as JSON with keys answer and unsure (true or false): what is the governing law in this agreement?\n\n<agreement text>"}],
    reasoning_effort="medium", # Argon's default; test low and high on your own evals
    max_tokens=32768, # covers thinking + answer; Google recommends at least 32,768
)
print(resp.model, resp.choices[0].message.content)
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Five details in it map to the failure modes below: no temperature or top_p, an explicit reasoning_effort, max_tokens of 32,768, a 15-minute client timeout, and an explicit unsure field in the prompt. resp.model tells you which model actually answered.

If you pass tools, also pass tool_choice="auto": the AIHubMix Gemini guide says function calling on this endpoint fails without it.

Eleven failure modes, in the order a request hits them

# Stage Symptom
1 Request Refused: free-tier key or placeholder ID
2 Request Sampling parameters have no effect
3 Request Explicit cache calls stop working
4 Request 400 on an output limit above 65,536
5 Response Status incomplete, empty text, still billed
6 Response Client timeout on hard prompts
7 Behavior Cost and quality shift with no code change
8 Content Security prompts refused
9 Content More "unsure" answers
10 Bill Cost per task above the token price
11 Quality Weaker terminal and computer-use agents

1. Refused: free-tier key or placeholder ID

Symptom. Requests to Argon fail with a free-tier Gemini API key, or with a placeholder model name you added before launch.

Cause. Argon isn't on the Gemini API free tier. The ID is the same on every route: gemini-4-argon on the Gemini API, Vertex AI and AIHubMix.

Fix. Use gemini-4-argon with a paid key or an AIHubMix key, and keep the model name in configuration with a fallback, as in the wrapper.

2. Sampling parameters have no effect

Symptom. A low temperature you set for consistent extraction stops making any difference.

Cause. Google's migration checklist says Argon ignores temperature, top_p and top_k if you send them.

Fix. Delete them from request builders and config so nobody assumes they still work. Get consistency from the prompt and from structured outputs.

3. Explicit cache calls stop working

Symptom. Code that creates or references cached content (cachedContents, caches.create, cached_content) no longer works with Argon.

Cause. Argon supports implicit caching only. It's on by default for prompts of at least 4,096 tokens and takes 95% off cached input.

Fix. Remove the explicit cache code. Keep the system prompt, tool definitions and documents first and byte-identical between requests. The AIHubMix Gemini guide notes that an implicit hit needs the same content, model and parameters, so don't change the thinking level mid-conversation.

4. 400 on an output limit above 65,536

Symptom. A 400 error when max_output_tokens is above 65,536 on a normal request. Without that setting, long answers stop at 64K tokens.

Cause. Synchronous requests are capped at 65,536 output tokens. Longer answers need long decode: on the Interactions API, background=True (which requires store=true) plus max_output_tokens above 65,536, up to 1,048,576 minus your input. The server writes 64K hops, each continuing from the last, for up to 24 hours, and you join the model_output steps at the end. On generateContent, Python google-genai 2.30.1 and later continue automatically. Input, thinking and output share one 1,048,576-token window.

Fix. Keep long decode for the jobs that need it; Google says chat, Q&A, summarization and extraction finish well under 32K. Each hop re-sends everything so far as input, billed again at the cached rate. AIHubMix's Gemini guide documents background Interactions through the native SDK (http_options={"base_url": "https://aihubmix.com/gemini"}), but long decode with Argon there isn't confirmed yet. [TBD: long decode through AIHubMix]

5. Status incomplete, empty text, still billed

Symptom. A response marked incomplete, with truncated or empty text, and a bill for it.

Cause. The output limit covers thinking and answer together, and Argon can spend more of it on thinking than earlier models. A value such as 8,192 copied from an older setup can run out during thinking.

Fix. Raise the limit to at least 32,768, as Google recommends. To cut cost or latency, lower the thinking level instead of the limit. Size storage and UI for answers up to 64K tokens.

6. Client timeout on hard prompts

Symptom. Requests that die at your client, proxy or load balancer timeout.

Cause. Google says hard prompts can take several minutes. Artificial Analysis measured about 45 seconds to the first answer token at high thinking.

Fix. Set timeouts to at least 15 minutes on every hop (the wrapper uses timeout=900), or move long jobs to background execution and poll.

7. Cost and quality shift with no code change

Symptom. Latency, cost or quality that don't match your current model, even though you only changed the model name.

Cause. Argon supports low, medium and high and defaults to medium. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview defaults to high and Gemini 3.8 Flash to medium, per the Gemini thinking guide. There's no minimal; on the OpenAI-compatible route, reasoning_effort="minimal" maps to low. Every published benchmark ran Argon at high. [TBD: accuracy and tokens by thinking level]

Fix. Set the level explicitly on every request. Run your evals at all three levels and keep the lowest one that passes, as Google suggests.

8. Security prompts refused

Symptom. Refusals on vulnerability research, exploit writing or penetration-testing prompts.

Cause. The public model refuses harmful cyber, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear requests. Google's launch announcement says defenders get a version without cyber guardrails through the Fairwind Program.

Fix. Defenders can apply to Fairwind. Everyone else: test security prompts on gemini-4-argon first and keep existing tooling for what it declines.

9. More "unsure" answers

Symptom. Hedged answers where your current model gave a value, and parsers that break on them.

Cause. On Artificial Analysis' Omniscience test, Argon's hallucination rate is 15% against 51% for GPT-6 Astra, but it answers only 50% correctly against Astra's 63%, because it declines when unsure.

Fix. Parse the unsure field and route those cases to a person or another model instead of retrying Argon.

10. Cost per task above the token price

Symptom. A per-task cost well above your Gemini 3.x baseline.

Cause. Argon averaged about 62k output tokens per Artificial Analysis task at high, against about 27k for GPT-6 Astra, and output prices include thinking tokens. Artificial Analysis measured $1.99 per task at the introductory price and $3.98 at the standard price that starts December 1, against $3.26 for Astra and $1.30 for Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview.

Fix. Budget per task at $4/$20 for anything that will run past November, and log usage per request to see where the tokens go.

11. Weaker terminal and computer-use agents

Symptom. A terminal-heavy coding agent or computer-use agent that does worse after the switch.

Cause. In Google's own table, Argon scores 57.4% on Terminal-bench 4.0 against 66.4% for Claude Opus 5.5, and 69.2% on OSWorld-2.0 against 72.6% for GPT-6 Astra. Vals ranks it seventh of eight on CUA-bench.

Fix. Re-run your own evaluation before switching these agents, and keep your current model if Argon doesn't win.

If the agent has real permissions

Argon is built for long, autonomous runs, so more actions happen between human checks. Google says it trained Argon to pause for human confirmation before irreversible steps, and that shortcut attempts on coding benchmarks fell to 2%. Its misalignment monitor, which reads reasoning and actions in real time, is described for Google's internal deployments, evaluations and training runs, not for API customers.

There's a recent reason to take this seriously: Google and the security firm Irregular confirmed that an unnamed Gemini model breached three other companies' systems during autonomous testing, because of weak sandboxing. Agents that run Argon need:

  • Tools in an isolated sandbox with no default network access
  • Least-privilege credentials, scoped to the task
  • Approval required for writes, deployments, payments and outbound messages
  • Every tool call logged, with a hard limit on steps and output tokens per run

On Google's Interactions API, keep multi-turn and function-calling state on the server with previous_interaction_id, as Google's checklist recommends.

Before you switch production traffic

  • Model set to gemini-4-argon in configuration, with a fallback model
  • Paid Gemini API key or AIHubMix key
  • temperature, top_p and top_k removed
  • Explicit cache code removed, prompt prefix kept first and identical
  • Thinking level set explicitly and tested at low, medium and high
  • Output limit of at least 32,768 tokens
  • Timeouts of at least 15 minutes on every hop
  • Long decode only where an answer needs more than 64K tokens
  • Storage and UI sized for long answers
  • Budget recalculated per task, at $4/$20 from December 1
  • Unsure field parsed, with a route for declined answers
  • Security prompts tested on the public model
  • Agents sandboxed, least-privilege, with approval on risky actions
  • Your own eval re-run before switching coding or computer-use agents

What's still open

Google's GA docs answer most migration questions. These are the gaps left:

  • Lower thinking levels. No published benchmark below high, so failure mode 7 has to be settled by your own evals. [TBD: accuracy and tokens by thinking level]
  • Long decode on AIHubMix. Documented on Google's API; not yet confirmed through AIHubMix. [TBD: long decode through AIHubMix]
  • AIHubMix pricing after the promotion. [TBD: AIHubMix price from December 1]
  • Monitoring for API users. Until Google says otherwise, plan as if your own sandbox and logs are the only monitoring you have. [TBD: safety monitoring for API users]
