The Doubt
Have you ever had this feeling, when asked what are your career goals, of not knowing what to respond, to the point where you say something just so you can deliver an answer and get on with it ?
Well I can relate. In fact I have felt this way for a long time, throughout most of my studies, up until just recently.
I feel this situation is particularily stressful when you're known among your friends and/or colleagues as a Jack of All Trades. (There's been a great article about this topic that you can find below:)
And you know what ?
It is perfectly ok.
There is really no harm in making sure you enjoy what you are doing. It's ok not to jump on the first job offer or IT school. After all, this is your life, so you might as well enjoy living it.
It's ok to pick the right path, the one that suits you the most.
I personally love being a Jack of All Trades. Whether it be tech-related or not, I don't really care, I just enjoy learning more about the world we live in. And I found that it is a great advantage. It shows that you're curious, and that you're always willing to learn. The only drawback is that... I was interested in doing everything.
But that didn't stop me. I kept saying to myself: Don't worry, the time will come where you will know your way. And indeed it came.
At first it it was programming in general that amazed me. It is the ability to use such a powerful tool to create new things, and to even help & respond to a need that drew me in. Then, I became particularily fond of Web Development, for the creative aspect, and for participating in something much, much bigger than I was.
Me enjoying web development is quite recent. When leaving High School five years ago, I applied in an IT engineering school in my hometown. And this was the best decision I could make: Starting from here, it all became clear: This is what I like to do, and this is the field I want to work in. Through studies and various internships, It got me learning a lot of languages, framework & librairies. I had all the material to pick the one I liked the most.
Actually, on this day, as I am writing this article, it is the last day of a 6 month internship, which marks the end of my studies, my graduation, and the start of a new professional life.
I have always wanted to write an article here on dev.to, because it helped me so much during my work, and it help me achieve my goals and eventually discovering what I truely am, as a developer.
In conclusion:
Please, do what you love.
I can't emphasize enough that what really matters is:
Do what you love doing. Be happy about what code or content you produce. Opportunities will come, I am sure you will find the right one.
You will get through this, and you will find your way.
