OpenClaw is a popular open agent. It reads your mail, keeps your calendar, browses for you and answers in WhatsApp or Telegram. It is free and MIT licensed. But you set it up yourself: an installer or npm, an onboarding wizard, an API key and a policy for what it may run.

Off Grid AI is the finished version of that idea for a normal person. You download one app, pick a local model, and it already knows your work. It asks before it sends anything.

Checked 30 October 2026 against openclaw.ai, the OpenClaw docs and the exec approvals page. Off Grid AI's Pro price is a limited-time lifetime offer, down from $119.

What setup looks like

OpenClaw's site gives three ways in: a curl install script, npm i -g openclaw followed by openclaw onboard, or a build from source. Desktop apps for macOS 15+, Windows 10/11 and Linux install Node.js for you. The docs list Node 24 or 26 and say you need an API key from your model provider.

You can use local models. OpenClaw's provider docs list local runtimes such as Ollama and LM Studio. You install and run those yourself, then point OpenClaw at them.

In Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD), the model is part of the app. Open Models, and the app shows which models fit your computer before it downloads one. There is no key to paste and no config file to edit.

What runs without asking

This is the main difference for a normal person.

OpenClaw's exec approvals page says the default security is full on gateway and node hosts, and ask is off. So host commands run without ordinary prompts. Allowlists only apply in allowlist mode, which is not the default. Its security page says agents with the message tool can send across conversations and channels by default. The docs give hardened baselines and an openclaw security audit command, so you can lock it down. You have to know to do it.

Off Grid AI starts from the other end. With Pro, Actions drafts replies, issues and docs through Gmail, Linear, Jira and Notion. Each one waits in an approval card with the full text. Nothing goes out until you press Approve. You can also give God standing rules, such as "never send anything to Acme without asking".

When you ask OGAD to work in an app on screen with Computer Use, you watch the run. You can Pause, Stop or Take Over at any point. Read how to automate a Mac task with local AI.

It already knows your work

OpenClaw remembers what you tell it in chat: your preferences, projects and people.

Off Grid AI Pro builds its memory from your actual day. Your screens, meetings, mail and documents become one local memory on your disk. Ask "what did Sam say about the rollout?" and you get the answer with the source. Nothing has to be explained twice, because it saw it.

On top of that memory, God is your chief of staff:

  • A morning briefing, with the approvals that wait for you.
  • Meeting prep with notes from last time.
  • Routines and scheduled tasks, such as a weekday brief or an approvals digest.
  • What people owe you, and what you owe them.

Your own models, on your own devices

OpenClaw can run local models. Its site also names Claude and GPT as models you can connect. If you pick a hosted model, the mail and calendar it reads for a task go to that provider.

With local models selected, Off Grid AI does the AI work on your computer. Off Grid AI Mobile (OGAM) runs its own models on iPhone and Android. With Pro, Sync carries your work between devices, device to device, with no server keeping a copy. You can also start a Mac task from your iPhone.

When OpenClaw is the better pick

Be fair to OpenClaw. It is free, MIT licensed and stewarded by the OpenClaw Foundation, an independent US non-profit. It is scriptable. It can run shell commands, use 29 chat channels and run cron jobs, hooks and webhooks. If you want to message your agent from WhatsApp or Signal and you are happy in a terminal, OpenClaw does that well. Off Grid AI does not live in your chat apps.

If you run a server that stays on all day, OpenClaw can keep working while your laptop sleeps. OGAD works while your computer is on and the app is running.

If you want an assistant that is ready in ten minutes, knows your day without being told and waits for your yes, use Off Grid AI.

Switch in ten minutes

  1. Download OGAD for Mac (Apple silicon), Windows or Linux.
  2. In Models, download a text model. The app shows which fit your computer.
  3. Get Pro and enter your key in the app.
  4. Connect Gmail, Linear, Jira or Notion in Integrations. Every action waits for your approval.
  5. Open God and read your first briefing.

If you use MCP servers with OpenClaw, OGAD can connect to them too. See how to connect a local AI to your apps through MCP.

FAQ

Is OpenClaw free?
Yes. OpenClaw's site says there is no subscription, no hosted tier and no paid version. It is MIT licensed. You still pay for any hosted model you connect.

Does OpenClaw ask before it runs a command?
Not by default. OpenClaw's exec approvals docs say the default security is full on gateway hosts and ask is off, so host commands run without ordinary prompts. You can make the policy stricter.

Does OpenClaw need an API key?
OpenClaw's docs say you need an API key from your model provider. It can also use local runtimes such as Ollama and LM Studio, which you set up yourself.

How is Off Grid AI different from OpenClaw?
Off Grid AI is a finished app for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. You pick a local model in the app, with no terminal and no key. Pro adds a local memory of your work and actions that wait for your approval.

What does Off Grid AI Pro cost?
On 30 October 2026, Pro costs $79.99 once for lifetime access, a limited-time price down from $119, or $7.99 a month. One key covers up to 5 devices.

Get Off Grid AI Pro and let your assistant ask first.
