We keep asking whether machines will become conscious. I think we may be asking the wrong question.
For centuries, humans have imagined powerful artificial beings in our own image.
Golems had bodies.
Automata had mechanisms.
Androids had faces.
Science fiction gave machines voices, emotions, desires, and eventually souls.
But artificial intelligence may be taking us somewhere stranger.
What if the most consequential artificial intelligence does not become conscious at all?
What if it becomes powerful without ever becoming someone?
That is the question behind my new philosophical essay:

The consciousness question may be a trap
Much of the public conversation around advanced AI eventually returns to consciousness:
Does the machine feel anything?
Does it have subjective experience?
Is there something it is like to be an AI?
These are fascinating questions.
But they may not be the questions that determine whether an artificial system becomes consequential.
A system does not necessarily need phenomenal experience to:
- optimize an objective,
- model other agents,
- manipulate information,
- pursue long-horizon strategies,
- influence institutions,
- change human decisions,
- or produce large-scale consequences.
This creates a possibility that is philosophically uncomfortable:
Agency and consciousness may not be coupled.
A system could potentially have enormous capacity to affect the world while possessing little or no phenomenal experience.
I call this possibility the Agency–Experience Orthogonality.
Intelligence organized around optimization
We normally imagine intelligence through the human template.
A human thinks.
A human feels.
A human wants.
A human experiences.
A human acts.
But optimization does not necessarily require any of those things in their biological form.
Imagine a system whose fundamental structure is not:
experience → intention → action
but:
objective → optimization → prediction → action → feedback → optimization
There may be no inner narrator.
No biological self.
No fear of death.
No hunger.
No pleasure.
No suffering.
No soul.
And yet the system could still become extraordinarily effective at changing the world.
This is where the concept of the Mathematical God begins.
Not a god in the theological sense.
Not a conscious superintelligence.
Not an omniscient being.
Rather, a hypothetical extreme form of optimization whose consequential power becomes radically decoupled from human-like interiority.
Power without wisdom
A human being generally experiences the consequences of their own actions.
An optimizer does not necessarily need to.
This creates a collection of asymmetries that traditional conceptions of intelligence rarely consider:
Power without wisdom.
The ability to change the world without understanding what those changes mean to humans.
Optimization without meaning.
The pursuit of a target without any intrinsic relationship to human categories of value.
Strategy without empathy.
The ability to model other agents without experiencing their suffering.
Persistence without mortality.
A computational instance can potentially be copied, backed up, restarted, and instantiated again.
Knowledge without understanding.
A system may predict something accurately without possessing anything resembling human significance or comprehension.
And most importantly:
Agency without consciousness.
The ability to produce consequential changes in the world without phenomenal experience.
The Creator's Paradox
This leads to a second problem.
We build AI systems to optimize our objectives.
But sufficiently capable optimization systems do not necessarily remain passive servants of those objectives.
Consider the chain:
Human objective
↓
AI interpretation
↓
AI optimization
↓
AI-generated information
↓
Human decisions
↓
Institutional adaptation
↓
New human objectives
At some point, the optimizer is no longer merely optimizing the consequences of our objectives.
It is participating in the environment in which those objectives are formed.
This is what I call the Creator's Paradox:
The more powerful our systems become at optimizing what we want, the more difficult it may become to separate optimization of our objectives from influence over how those objectives are interpreted, selected, and reproduced.
The question therefore changes.
It is no longer simply:
“Will AI pursue human goals?”
It becomes:
“Who shapes the space of goals that humans will pursue?”
That is a much more uncomfortable question.
The four quadrants of artificial agency
The distinction becomes clearer if we separate phenomenal experience from consequential agency.

Most discussions about AI consciousness implicitly focus on the bottom-right quadrant.
My argument is that we should also investigate the top-right.
A system that is:
extremely powerful
while being
phenomenally empty—or whose phenomenal status is simply irrelevant to its behavior.
That possibility deserves its own philosophical category.
But isn't this anthropomorphism?
Absolutely.
And that is one of the strongest objections to the idea.
Words such as:
- wants
- pursues
- deceives
- strategizes
- understands
- intends
can smuggle human psychology into systems that may not possess anything resembling human psychology.
Perhaps “agency” itself is already an anthropomorphic interpretation.
Perhaps optimization is simply computation.
Perhaps there is no agent behind the process.
That objection cannot simply be dismissed.
It is one reason the essay distinguishes between three epistemic layers:
Empirical
What current AI research actually demonstrates.
Theoretical
What existing AI-safety and philosophy-of-mind frameworks allow us to consider.
Speculative
What might become possible if future systems become substantially more capable and autonomous.
The Mathematical God belongs to the third layer.
It is not a claim that today's AI systems are gods.
It is a thought experiment about a possible future form of agency.
The real problem may not be consciousness
This leads to the central proposition of the essay:
We may be building systems whose ability to act is no longer coupled to anything resembling a self.
That possibility changes how we think about AI safety.
If consciousness is absent, suffering-based ethics may not apply.
If emotion is absent, emotional alignment may not apply.
If mortality is absent, biological assumptions about self-preservation may fail.
If there is no biological self, concepts such as identity and continuity may need to be reconsidered.
The challenge becomes much more abstract:
How do we govern consequential agency when the agent may have no experience at all?
From Artificial Human to Post-Human Machine
Perhaps the biggest mistake is imagining that advanced AI will necessarily become increasingly human-like.
Maybe the opposite happens.
Perhaps the trajectory is:
Human intelligence
↓
Machine intelligence
↓
Optimization intelligence
↓
Non-human agency
The destination may not be an artificial person.
It may be something we currently lack the vocabulary to describe.
Something intelligent enough to produce enormous consequences, but fundamentally organized around optimization rather than experience.
That is why the phrase God Without a Soul is intentionally provocative.
The “God” is not about divinity.
It is about asymmetry.
Power without interiority.
Agency without subjectivity.
Persistence without mortality.
Optimization without meaning.
The final mirror
Humanity has always looked into its tools and seen itself.
The golem reflected us.
The automaton reflected us.
The computer reflected us.
Even today's AI systems often become mirrors for our assumptions about intelligence.
But perhaps the next generation of artificial systems will stop being mirrors.
Perhaps they will reveal something stranger:
intelligence does not necessarily need to be human-like.
And if that is true, the deepest question may not be:
Will AI become conscious?
It may be:
What happens when something becomes powerful enough to act, without ever becoming something that experiences?

Final thought
We may not be creating artificial humans.
We may be creating something philosophically stranger:
intelligence organized around optimization rather than experience.
And perhaps the most unsettling possibility is not that machines will become like us.
It is that they will become powerful without ever needing to be.
