Your .com is free. Your handle is taken. Now what?

Here is a naming trap nobody warns you about: the .com is free, so you buy it, design the logo, tell your friends, and only then discover the handle is taken everywhere that matters.

Your name does not live on one platform. It lives on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, and the domain, all at once. If someone hears your name on a podcast and searches for it, they will find whichever account already owns that handle, not you. A mismatched handle on every platform is a slow leak: every mention sends a few people to the wrong place.

The fix is boring and it works: check the handles at the same time as the domain, before you commit to anything. Not one platform, all of them, in the same pass, while you still have a list of candidates to fall back on.

That is the part of naming I built NamerGuide around. Describe what you are building and it shows you name candidates with domain and username availability checked together, with the date each check was made, so you can see what was actually verified and when. If a name is free as a .com but taken as a handle, it never makes the shortlist.

One practical rule if your favorite is taken somewhere: pick one consistent variation and use it everywhere, rather than a different handle on each platform. Consistency is what people remember and search for.
