Working with AI coding tools has changed how I think about architecture, but not in some huge “future of software” kind of way. It’s been more of a practical thing I started noticing while generating and modifying real code day to day.
One pattern keeps showing up over and over again:
When a system mixes too many responsibilities together, AI-generated code becomes harder to guide and less consistent. But when responsibilities are separated clearly, the output suddenly becomes much more stable and predictable.
That sounds pretty obvious on paper, but the difference feels much bigger once you work with AI tools regularly.
Where things start getting messy
In a lot of real-world projects, especially older ones, responsibilities slowly drift into the same place over time.
A single service might handle validation, database access, caching, orchestration, mapping, and sometimes authorization too. It usually happens gradually, so nobody really notices it becoming complicated until much later.
For humans, this is annoying but still manageable if you already know the codebase well.
For AI tools though, this kind of structure creates problems very quickly.
Now the model has to interpret multiple concerns at the same time. It has to decide what belongs where, avoid breaking unrelated logic, and somehow stay consistent inside boundaries that aren’t clearly defined anymore.
Most of the time the generated code is not completely wrong. The issue is more subtle than that. The output just becomes less reliable. Small changes in prompts can lead to very different implementations, and the overall behavior starts feeling inconsistent.
Why tightly coupled code becomes difficult
The issue usually isn’t that the AI cannot code.
It’s that the system itself does not provide enough structure.
When everything is tightly connected:
- It becomes unclear where changes should happen
- Responsibilities overlap
- Small modifications affect unrelated areas
- And architectural decisions become implicit instead of explicit
So while generating code, the model is also forced to make architectural assumptions at the same time. That’s usually where things begin drifting.
The moment this started to make sense for me was when I noticed something subtle, AI models are not really processing a codebase the way humans do over long periods of time.
As developers, we slowly build mental context. We remember why certain decisions were made, which parts of the system are fragile, and which shortcuts exist for historical reasons. Even messy systems become somewhat manageable because we carry that context in our heads.
LLMs work differently. They only see a limited amount of context at a time, and that context acts a bit like working memory.
So when a single class or component mixes too many responsibilities together, a large part of that limited context gets consumed by unrelated details instead of the actual change you are trying to make.
The model is no longer focusing purely on the feature itself. It is also spending attention on validation logic, infrastructure concerns, state handling, side effects, formatting, orchestration, and everything else living in the same place.
At that point, even small requests become harder to execute consistently because the signal gets buried inside too much noise.
That was the moment where separation of concerns started feeling different to me. It stopped feeling like just a maintainability principle and started feeling more like a way of reducing cognitive load for both humans and AI systems.
You start seeing things like:
- Logic duplicated across layers
- Infrastructure concerns leaking into domain logic
- Large methods growing even larger
- Components slowly taking on unrelated responsibilities
Nothing necessarily breaks immediately. The code just becomes less precise over time.
What changed after separating responsibilities
At one point I refactored one of these services and separated things more aggressively.
Instead of one large service handling everything:
- Validation moved into dedicated components
- Persistence moved behind repositories
- Caching became isolated
- Orchestration only handled workflow
- Domain logic stayed focused on business rules
The behavior of the system barely changed. But the structure became much easier to reason about.
What surprised me was how much this affected AI-generated output too.
The same thing showed up in UI components
I started noticing a very similar pattern in frontend code.
Some UI components had gradually turned into giant files handling rendering, API calls, validation, state management, formatting, and business logic all at once.
For humans, those components already feel difficult to maintain. But with AI-generated changes, the problems become even more obvious.
You ask the model to add a loading state, and suddenly unrelated rendering logic changes too. Or you request a small visual adjustment and validation behavior gets modified accidentally because everything is connected inside the same component.
After separating responsibilities more clearly, things improved a lot.
For example:
- Data fetching moved into hooks or services
- Business rules moved outside the component
- Formatting logic became reusable utilities
- State management became more isolated
- Components focused mostly on rendering and interaction
Once the UI layer became more focused, AI-generated changes became noticeably more predictable. Small prompts stayed small. Visual updates stopped affecting unrelated logic as often. And the generated code felt much more aligned with the existing structure instead of partially reinventing it every time.
What I noticed afterward
After these refactors, a few things became consistently better:
- Prompts became shorter
- Generated code stayed inside the correct layer more often
- Fewer unnecessary dependencies appeared
- Duplication decreased
- I spent less time fixing generated code afterward
The interesting part is that this improvement did not come from better prompting techniques.
It mostly came from reducing ambiguity inside the codebase itself. Once the boundaries became clearer, the model had fewer things to guess about.
This is not really a new concept
None of this is new from a software engineering perspective. Separation of concerns has always mattered.
The difference now is that AI tools make the cost of ignoring it much more visible.
As developers, we compensate for messy systems because we slowly build mental context over time. We remember historical decisions, workarounds, and hidden assumptions.
AI does not really have that kind of accumulated understanding. It mostly works with the structure directly in front of it. So if the architecture is unclear, the inconsistency shows up immediately in the generated output.
A small shift in perspective
I don’t think we need to start designing systems specifically for AI.
But working with these tools has reinforced something that was already true long before AI coding assistants existed:
Good architecture reduces ambiguity.
Clear boundaries make systems easier to reason about. Tight coupling creates friction. Mixed responsibilities make changes harder to control.
At some point, this stopped feeling like an “AI problem” to me and started feeling more like a reminder of an older software engineering principle:
If a system is difficult to understand, it will usually be difficult to work with, whether the thing working with it is a human or a machine.
