I spent three hours yesterday trying to write the "perfect" prompt for my project. And then I realized: I wasn’t engineering. I was praying.
Prompt engineering is dead. What we need now is cognitive scaffolding—a smarter, more structured way to think with AI, not just talk at it.
The Problem with Prompt Engineering
We treat AI like a vending machine: insert the right words, get the right answer. But AI doesn’t understand your words. It predicts the next likely response. So when you spend 20 minutes tweaking a prompt, you’re not engineering—you’re guessing.
And it’s not reproducible. What works today might fail tomorrow. What works for you might not work for your friend. It’s trial and error without a system.
What Is Cognitive Scaffolding?
Cognitive scaffolding is about designing the entire interaction—not just the prompt. It’s borrowed from education, where scaffolding helps learners internalize new concepts. With AI, it means:
Guiding the thought process, not just asking for an output.
Adding constraints to force deeper thinking (e.g., "Explain this like I’m 12" or "Write a haiku, not an essay").
Iterating with feedback, not just starting over.
Assigning roles to give the AI context (e.g., "You’re a physics professor at IIT Bombay").
It’s proactive, not reactive. It’s about collaboration, not control.
Why It Matters for Students
Students, we’re great at jugaad—finding clever solutions. But jugaad works best when you understand the system. Prompt engineering is the opposite: it’s trial and error without understanding.
Cognitive scaffolding is jugaad with a framework. It’s efficient, inclusive, and doesn’t rely on linguistic precision—perfect for a country where English isn’t everyone’s first language.
How to Start Today
✅ Stop obsessing over the "perfect" prompt. Focus on designing the interaction.
✅ Use constraints and roles to guide the AI’s thinking.
✅ Iterate with feedback. Treat every interaction as a learning opportunity.
✅ Explain your reasoning. Tell the AI why you’re asking for something.
