There's no numbered ranking in ChatGPT. "Ranking" means being one of the businesses it names when someone asks who to hire or what to buy. The order changes from one conversation to the next. You're either named or you're not.

Most advice on this is vague, so here's what's actually under your control, with the technical parts called out.

Named vs cited

Two different outcomes:

  • Named: ChatGPT mentions your business as an option.
  • Cited: ChatGPT links your page as a source for its answer.

This post is about being named. Being cited is a content-structure problem.

Where the answer comes from

ChatGPT draws on what the model learned in training, and on what it looks up live. For most "best X" and "near me" questions it searches, reads the pages that come back, and writes from them. Those pages are mostly not your homepage. They're "best of" lists, directories, review sites, Reddit threads and comparison posts about your category. A business described the same way across several of them looks like a safe recommendation.

The steps, with the technical ones flagged

  1. Baseline it. Write ten real customer questions, ask each in a fresh chat, and record who's named and which sites are linked. Repeat monthly with the same questions.
  2. Let OAI-SearchBot in (technical). OpenAI says that if you block it, your site won't appear in ChatGPT search answers. Check robots.txt, then check the firewall, security plugin or CDN bot settings, which block it quietly far more often. This is the most common reason we find a business missing entirely.
  3. Say plainly what you do, for whom, where and for how much. "We help businesses grow online" gives a model nothing to match. "We build Shopify stores for fashion brands in the UK, from US$650" does.
  4. Get onto the pages it reads. The links in your baseline answers are the pages it trusts for your category. Get listed on them.
  5. Keep business facts identical everywhere. Name, address, phone and services, word for word, on your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
  6. Earn real reviews on public platforms. Never fake them.
  7. If you sell products, keep the feed clean (technical). ChatGPT shopping uses the product feeds merchants share with OpenAI, and title, description, price, availability, brand and images are required fields. When we checked 162 Shopify brands, only 39% exposed price, stock status and a barcode together in their structured data.

What doesn't work

  • Asking ChatGPT about yourself repeatedly. Your chats don't train it to recommend you to anyone else.
  • Stuffing pages with "best" and "top-rated". It weighs what other sources say about you, not what you say about yourself.
