Do the Job Before You Have the Title

People wait for the title
before they'll act like they have it.

"When I'm senior, I'll mentor."
"When I'm a lead, I'll own the roadmap."

It's backwards.

Titles are mostly a lagging indicator.
They confirm what you've already been doing,
they rarely grant permission to start.

Want to be a lead?
Start writing the doc no one asked for.
Start unblocking the person next to you.
Start caring about the thing above your pay grade.

Nobody promotes a promise.
They promote a pattern
they've already watched you keep.

Do the job first, quietly, for a while.
The title is just the paperwork catching up.
