Hello readers,
Hope everyone is doing well!
In this article I am going to share my experience of attending the first ever AWS Community Summit APAC 2022 and my first international event in Bangkok, Thailand.
Journey starts here 👇🏻
I got mail on 12th July 2022 from APJ Community Builder program subject line was quite interesting "Are you able to attend the APJ Community Summit?" It was received around 18:22 IST. But due to my busy schedule on this day I couldn't read that time. While going to bed I generally read all the mails. I read this mail and the content. I was surprised with this invitation. I never got any private invitation in my whole career for global events. For me it was on cloud nine ( In Marathi we say आकाश ठेंगणे वाटणे - means more happiness ). Just to reconfirm this I double checked with Shafraz Rahim and Rohini Gaonkar. Yes they have confirmed the same. Next day I told my wife Trupti about this. She also got happy after hearing this news. Then we discussed this because it was the first time I am going to fly without family and they are also going to stay alone without me ( wife and my kid). So it will be challenging for both of us. We may need to confirm the same before accepting the invitation. She said yes without thinking too much about this. She said "Avi go yaar this is your time". You are doing good and you are getting back what you are doing for the community. These words always motivate me when she supports me.
Next step
Next step was to fill out the form and accept the invitation which I did. Later received multiple communications to confirm our flight details and hotel accommodation. One thing here I want to mention about AWS is they always select the best hotel or accommodation for their event. Not just because of this summit but whichever event I attended in India it was the best venue. Thanks to AWS and the team for curating this venue. Special thanks to Shafraz Rahim and team.
Never been so easy
My journey to this summit was not easy as always. On 13th August 2022 I got to know from the Doctor my father is in critical condition. They mentioned nothing can predict that you have to visit him immediately. We went to Mumbai immediately on the same day. 15th August 2022 was the last day to submit a session to present the summit if anyone was interested. I wasn't able to think much on technical topics due to my condition at home. But my father said don't worry, whatever you can try to submit topics. I submitted topic " How to write blog and share learning with Community - Storytelling skill " ( unfortunately it was not selected for the final summit). Even he told me not to wait for me to go and attend the summit. Nothing will happen to me, but I was aware of the actual fact. I made up my mind that I need to be here to take care of him whatever I can even if I missed this opportunity. On 22nd August 2022 he left this world 😭😭 but while leaving us he told me one line "Don't stop Avinash keep doing good work and helping people" - he was not able to speak properly because he lost control of brain at that time but he tried to speak. In his life he helped many people whichever way he was able to do, sometimes not having a single penny in his pocket. He is still with me with his thoughts. After this I have to move to my village for one month to follow some rituals. I came back to Bangalore on 7th Sept 2022.
Preparation start
The India team whoever got the invitation got added into a common WhatsApp group created to discuss the process and any challenges like currency conversion, visa form filling, getting sim etc etc. Then the final agenda for the summit got published. We were so excited to meet everyone there, attend all sessions, award functions with traditional attire and many more surprises. First time going to meet many folks from India communities and APJ region. I am so excited for this summit.
Thanks to Rohini & Vivek for creating this group and making this easier to reach in the summit.
Time to fly to Bangkok
Yeah...It is time to fly. Bangalore folks were going on the same flight. Journey was going to be exciting. Off-course every moment is going to capture and put in social. and why not ? This is going to be memorable if we could look back years after we should feel proud of ourselves and happy. This is the first picture we took at Bangalore airport before boarding the flight. This time to experience diversity in APJ along with Indian diversity.
We finally landed in Bangkok and migration was also done smoothly. Now it's time to enter the summit. So much excitement...
What warm welcome from AWS team
Got a great goodies pack from the AWS team and warm welcome from the hotel team. Everyone checked in the finished process and we entered our room.
Welcome at Dinner party
Now it's time to meet everyone at Dinner party. Also time to meet my most favourite person Jason Dunn, Shafraz Rahim and other AWS team members. Dinner party was planned nicely. Welcome introduction, favourite activity is kahoot.io questions 😅 and then networking with everyone. Kahot was very interesting. We always look at this questionnaire as learning along with fun. From the India team Toshal and Jones were able to get podiums.
And this is our India community team photos. I couldn't share all the photos because google drive was already flooded with many photos.
Hey, wait, where is the photo with your favourite one ?
Welcome day was more of meeting each other and knowing each other.
First day of summit
Day arrived finally here to "Learn, Connect and Entertainment"
Kris Howard and Shafraz shared insights from APJ community works done so far from AWS user groups, Community Builders and Heroes.
- Communities are key
- Communities are so important
Later there were various sessions planned on serverless, hybrid video, interesting journey of AWS Lambda, art of storytelling. Also we had good discussion on AWS Community workshop with Jason. Then it is time to take APJ community groups with the country flag. And here is photo 👇🏻
AWS Community Summit APAC awards.
Time to celebrate awards. The AWS APJ team managed to get around 8-10 categories for appreciating contributions done by AWS user groups, leaders, heroes and Community builders. Many of the categories our India team got nominated out of them some grab also here are details.
There was one amazing thing planned by Amandeep Singh - Punjabi Bhangra dance and he made everyone dance the same.
The day first ends with lots of learning and fun.
Second day of summit
Second day start with a surprise talk by Dananjaya J H - World Champion of Public Speaking 2014. Me and Neethu got a chance to share the stage with him and share our thoughts.
Interesting panel discussion was hosted by women leaders.
Some more interesting and insightful session on
- how we can run user group and what are challenges by Vivek Raja & Neetu Mallan
- How to build communities by Mark Birch
- Japan user group session on how they build Jaws Pankration event
This is how the summit's second day finished with an amazing session and closing note by Kris Howard and Shafraz.
In this summit we met Farrah Campbell, Raja SP, Justin, Sheraz Hasan and other AWS folks ( Sorry couldn't remember everyone's name). It was a superb experience of talking with them.
This is not just the end of the summit, it is the beginning of a new era for AWS Community Summit APAC. And hoping to join next year too.
Thanks to everyone for giving me the opportunity. This will inspire me more to make contributions and help the AWS community.
What I felt after meeting India team

We discussed many ideas, communities initiatives.
