Node.js is single-threaded. For I/O-bound workloads, that's a superpower — the event loop handles thousands of concurrent connections without thread-switching overhead. But for CPU-bound work — image processing, cryptography, PDF generation, data transformation — a single thread is a hard ceiling. Everything queues behind the slow computation, and latency spikes.
The standard solution is worker threads. The standard problem is that managing a pool of them is 200 lines of boilerplate you don't want to write on every project.
worker-pool solves this. It's a zero-dependency worker thread pool with a single clean API: give it a worker script, tell it how many threads you want, and call pool.run(data).
The Problem: Raw Worker Threads Are Manual
Here's what un-pooled worker threads look like in practice:

This spawns a new thread per request. Thread startup costs ~5ms. Under load, you exhaust all CPU cores and memory. There's no queue, no timeout, no graceful shutdown. It works until it doesn't.
A proper pool solves all of this:

What worker-pool Provides
The package has six properties that matter for production:
1. Fixed pool size with CPU-aware defaults
The pool spawns exactly size workers at initialization and keeps them alive. Default size is os.availableParallelism() — the number of logical CPU cores. Threads start once, not per-request.
2. Task queue with backpressure
When all workers are busy, tasks queue. When workers free up, the queue drains automatically. Set maxQueue to limit depth — further submissions reject with a clear error rather than silently growing memory:

3. Per-task timeouts
Hung workers are fatal in production. Set taskTimeout and the pool automatically rejects the promise, terminates the hung thread, and spawns a replacement:

A 10-second task that hangs won't block the pool indefinitely. The worker is replaced, and subsequent tasks get a fresh thread.
4. Error propagation
Workers signal errors by posting { __error: 'message' }:

The pool converts this to a rejected promise with the right error message. Worker crashes (unhandled exceptions) also reject the in-flight task and spawn a replacement.
5. Graceful shutdown
pool.shutdown() waits for in-flight tasks to complete before terminating workers. Pass a forceMs argument for a hard deadline:

Queued tasks that haven't started are rejected immediately on shutdown.

Under 100 concurrent requests, this serves all of them — event loop stays free, compression happens in parallel across POOL_SIZE threads, and queue depth tells you exactly when you're resource-constrained.

Zero dependencies. Node.js >= 16 required (worker threads are stable since Node 12, but availableParallelism() is Node 18+, with a fallback for older versions).

Design Decisions
Why zero dependencies?
Every dependency is a supply chain risk, an update burden, and a potential source of breaking changes. A 250-line utility shouldn't pull in a dependency tree. The entire package fits in one file.
Why not use piscina?
Piscina is excellent and battle-tested. If you need move semantics, Atomics integration, or you're running at extreme scale, use Piscina. worker-pool is for teams who want a simpler API with fewer knobs and zero external dependencies.
Why terminate timed-out workers instead of reusing them?
A timed-out worker might be in an inconsistent state — half-way through a computation with corrupted memory. Terminating and replacing is the only safe option. The overhead (~5ms to spawn a new thread) is negligible compared to the risk of data corruption from a recycled stuck thread.
Pool Sizing Guide
Getting the pool size right matters:

Always leave at least one core for the event loop. Monitor pool.stats.queued — if it's consistently > 0, increase the pool size or horizontally scale.
