One SSH login can quietly rewrite your known_hosts, and a line diff will not show it

Since OpenSSH 7.6, UpdateHostKeys is enabled by default. The practical effect: after you authenticate to a host you trust by a bare key, that host may rewrite your known_hosts entry for its own name. It can add host keys, prune keys it does not hold, and keep only the key it authenticated with. No prompt. ssh exits 0. Stderr stays empty.

I reproduced this against a scripted local sshd. The store held a legitimate ed25519 key plus a pinned key the server had never held. After a single connection, the pinned key was gone, an extra server key had landed, and the client reported success quietly.

Why a line diff misses it

On a hashed store (HashKnownHosts yes, a common default), every write re-salts the entries. The same host can produce different bytes on two writes, so diff before after reports changes on entries that did not semantically change, and a real edit can disappear into that noise.

What survives re-salting is the key itself. Compare by the SHA256 fingerprint ssh-keygen -lf prints, together with the host and any @marker, not the raw line.

cp ~/.ssh/known_hosts before
ssh your-host true
cp ~/.ssh/known_hosts after
ssh-keygen -lf before | sort > before.fp
ssh-keygen -lf after | sort > after.fp
diff before.fp after.fp
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

What the channel can and cannot do

  • It cannot lock you out. The key that authenticated the session is not the one removed.
  • It can plant an additional host key for its own name, which a later connection could present.
  • Read-only CA trust neutralizes the whole channel. When a host key comes from @cert-authority, OpenSSH skips UpdateHostKeys for it.

Fixes, easiest first

  1. Close the channel:
Host *
    UpdateHostKeys no
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

You lose silent rotation; a real rotation becomes a warning you clear by hand.

  1. Trust a CA instead of a bare key:
@cert-authority *.example.com ssh-ed25519 AAAA...your-ca-key
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Rotation keeps working, and the server no longer has write authority over its own entry.

  1. Change nothing: baseline and witness, as in the snippet above.

One honest limit

For a hashed entry the file stores salt plus hash, not the hostname. Across a changed salt, a real server swap and an innocent re-salt are indistinguishable. A checker that stays silent there is also making a claim ("clean") it cannot support. The useful version reports "cannot tell" as its own result instead of folding it into "no change."
