Week 28 – Understanding Is Not Always About Explaining More

Every week we continue having conversations with students about their learning experiences

Different departments
Different courses
Different challenges

But sometimes completely

different students can reveal something connected

This week two conversations made us think differently about understanding

One student was studying Surveying and Geoinformatics
Another was studying Industrial Design with Mechanical Engineering as part of the program

Their challenges were completely different

But their experiences pointed towards something important
Sometimes the problem starts with the foundation

The Surveying and Geo informatics student told us that Adjustment Computation was difficult because of the calculations

Remote Sensing brought another challenge because it involved software and technical tools
When asked what helps them understand better the answer was simple

Understanding the basics first
And having someone explain it clearly

That made us think
Sometimes students are introduced to more complex topics while still struggling with the foundation beneath them

The next explanation might be correct

The lecturer might explain everything properly
The textbook might contain all the information

But if the student is missing something from the beginning adding more information might not solve the problem

Sometimes understanding needs to start earlier
Sometimes students need to go back

Sometimes students need to see what they are trying to understand

Another student studying Industrial Design told us that 3D Modeling was one of the most difficult things to understand

We asked what frustrated her the most

Her answer was clear
Visualizing the object

She explained that what would help her understand better was seeing a step by step

demonstration and having the object explained from different angles

This was interesting
The challenge was not simply learning the software
It was not simply following instructions

The student needed help seeing what she was expected to create

That is different from just giving more explanations
Sometimes the learner needs another perspective

Sometimes they need to see the process

Sometimes they need to move through it step by step
More explanation is not always the answer

These were two completely different learning experiences
One student needed a stronger foundation

Another needed a better way to visualize

But both experiences made us think about the same thing
Understanding is not always about explaining more

Sometimes students already have information in front of them
Sometimes they have lecture notes
Sometimes they have videos
Sometimes they have textbooks

But something is still missing
The starting point might be too advanced

The explanation might skip important steps

The student might be unable to visualize what is being discussed

The information might be correct but the way it is presented may not connect with how the student understands

This is why we keep listening
We are slowly learning that

helping someone understand is not always about making the explanation longer

Sometimes it is about knowing where the explanation should begin

Sometimes it is about showing instead of only telling
Sometimes it is about slowing down

What BAINT is learning
BAINT is still early
We are still researching
We are still talking directly with students

And every conversation continues to teach us something

We do not want to assume that every student struggles in the same way

We want to keep listening
Because better learning might begin with a simple question

What exactly is stopping this student from understanding
The answer may be different for everyone

And that is something worth paying attention to
Latest BAINT Update

20+ people have now joined the BAINT waitlist

Our demo is currently under maintenance and we are working towards getting it back online
BAINT Insight Cards have now reached 020/1000

We are continuing our mission of showing people our demo for testing while speaking directly with students about their real learning experiences

Every conversation is helping us understand more about how students learn and what makes learning difficult for them

Still early
Still listening
Still building

A Small Request for Help
We are currently building BAINT independently while continuing our research with students

Access to better gadgets especially a laptop would help us move faster and continue building from the insights we are gathering

If anyone is able to support us with gadgets that could help us continue building BAINT please reach out to us

Every bit of support can help move this work forward
The journey continues
We do not have all the answers yet

That is why we keep asking
We keep listening
We keep documenting
And we keep building
One student conversation at a time

One insight at a time
One step at a time
