A year ago, I stepped away from DEV.
I didn't make a big announcement. I didn't write a goodbye post. I simply stopped showing up.
At first, I thought I'd only be away for a little while.
Then days became weeks.
Weeks became months.
And before I knew it, an entire year had passed.
Why I Left
Sometimes you don't leave a community because you hate it.
Sometimes, you just need to step away.
Life gets busy. Your priorities change. You lose motivation. You start wondering whether the things you were doing still make sense.
That was where I found myself.
I stopped writing. I stopped checking in. And eventually, DEV became something I remembered rather than something I actively participated in.
At the time, I didn't know how long I'd be gone.
One Year Later
Coming back after a year feels surprisingly strange.
The platform is familiar, but at the same time, it feels different.
I looked around and realized how much can happen in a year.
People have published hundreds of articles.
New developers have joined.
Others have grown their audiences.
Some people I remember may have moved on to completely different things.
And then there's me.
Starting again.
So Why Did I Come Back?
Because I realized something.
Taking a break is okay.
Starting over is okay too.
But sometimes you have to return to the things that once inspired you.
I missed writing.
I missed sharing ideas.
I missed learning from other people and discovering different perspectives.
Most importantly, I realized that I didn't have to come back as the same person who left.
I can come back with new ideas, new experiences, and a completely different mindset.
This Time, I'm Doing Things Differently
I'm not coming back with the expectation that everything will happen immediately.
I'm not going to worry about how many people read every article.
I'm not going to compare my progress with someone who has been writing consistently for years.
Instead, I'm going to focus on showing up.
One article at a time.
One idea at a time.
One conversation at a time.
Here's to Starting Again
Coming back after a year has reminded me that you don't have to have everything figured out before you start.
Maybe you've also taken a long break from something you once enjoyed.
Maybe you're thinking about coming back.
Maybe you're worried that you've been gone for too long.
You haven't.
There's always a way to start again.
So, after a year away...
I'm back.
And this time, I'm curious to see where the journey takes me.
Have you ever taken a long break from something you loved and eventually came back?
I'd love to hear your story in the comments
