OpenRouter's free models have a daily request cap, and it isn't one number. From their rate limits page, as of 2026-08-28:

Note the column header: credits purchased, all time. Not your current balance. Not a subscription. A one-time $10 purchase, at any point in the account's history, moves the daily ceiling from 50 to 1,000 and it stays there after those credits are spent.
Twenty times the daily volume, for a one-off $10, on models that cost nothing per token.
Two practical consequences.
If you're evaluating OpenRouter's free tier and hitting 429s at around 50 requests, you haven't found the ceiling — you've found the unfunded ceiling. Whether that's worth $10 depends on your project, but it's worth knowing the number you're actually measuring.
And if you write about OpenRouter's free limits, check which tier you're quoting. I've seen 50/day, 200/day and 1000/day cited for the same service, all presented as the limit. Two of those are real tiers; the middle one appears to be an old figure that outlived the page it was on.
