Have you ever wanted to translate entire books or documents with AI — but without uploading your personal files to the cloud?
That was my motivation when creating Smart Book Translator, a desktop application that uses DeepL, OpenAI, or Google Translate APIs to translate EPUB, DOCX, and PDF files intelligently and locally — keeping your data 100% private.
The project started as a personal learning journey to explore how modern technologies like React, Node.js, and SQLite can be combined to create something truly practical.

🚀 Project Overview
Smart Book Translator is designed as a cross-platform desktop app that performs intelligent translation of long documents using AI-based translation APIs.
Main Features:
📘 Supports EPUB, DOCX, and PDF
⚙️ Smart document splitting into manageable chunks
🧠 AI-based translation via DeepL, OpenAI, or Google Translate
📊 Real-time progress tracking via WebSockets
🗂️ Built-in glossary management for consistent translations
🔁 Automatic retries on failed requests
💾 Uses SQLite for local storage
🔐 100% local data and key encryption
Everything happens on your machine — no cloud sync, no telemetry, no external servers.
🧠 Tech Stack
Layer Technology
Frontend React + Tailwind + Electron
Backend Node.js + Express
Database SQLite (via Sequelize ORM)
APIs DeepL, OpenAI, Google Translate
Architecture REST + WebSocket bridge for real-time updates
💡 Why Build This
The project’s goal wasn’t to create a commercial tool — it was to learn:
How to parse and manipulate complex document formats
How to handle API rate limits and error retries gracefully
How to make an AI app feel fast and responsive
How to design for privacy-first local execution
Also, it was an experiment in AI-assisted development:
I used ChatGPT and Cursor AI to help with debugging, documentation, and architectural brainstorming — combining human design with AI iteration.
⚠️ Legal & Ethical Notes
This project is strictly for personal and educational use.
You may:
✅ Translate books or documents you own
❌ Not redistribute copyrighted translations
❌ Not use it for commercial purposes
❌ Not bypass DRM or access restrictions
Respect authors, translators, and intellectual property laws.
🔒 Privacy by Design
Smart Book Translator was built with privacy in mind:
✅ 100% Local: Translations, history, and API keys never leave your computer
✅ AES-256 key encryption
✅ No telemetry, analytics, or external sync
✅ One-click data deletion
Your words, your books — your control.
🧩 Next Steps
Package app for Windows/Linux
Add configurable glossary export/import
Integrate open-source translation models for offline use
Community translation memory sharing (optional and encrypted)

✨ Final Thoughts
This project started as an experiment — but it became a powerful real-world tool.
AI isn’t just about chatbots — it’s about building tools that empower users to learn and create, responsibly and locally.
If you’re into AI, language, or privacy-focused applications, I’d love your feedback!
