I brought my 2012 browser strategy game back. Here is what it is like to play

I made a browser strategy game in 2012. Flash took it down with it, and this year I finally brought it back. Before anything else, I want to tell you what it is actually like to play, because that is the part that matters.

A town in Legend of Gods

The loop: short visits, long ambitions

Legend of Gods is a fantasy strategy MMO in your browser. A typical visit takes five minutes:

  1. Collect what your Lumbermill, Stone Quarry, Iron Mine and Farm produced while you were away.
  2. Pick the next building for the queue. Only the first one is worked on, so order matters.
  3. Recruit or upgrade soldiers.
  4. Send your hero out to fight, then close the tab and come back later.

It is the kind of game you check between other things, and every check moves your town a little further.

An army with personality

Cottages give you peasants, the Barracks knights, the Training Grounds paladins, the Church priests, the Eagle Cliff eagles and the Angel Shrine angels. There are 12 unit types and each one trains through 10 levels, so an army you have cared for over weeks feels genuinely different from a fresh one.

Recruitment

Battles are a small tactics puzzle

Your hero explores a map full of monster groups, 28 kinds in all. Fights are turn-based on a grid and units act by initiative. Who moves first and where everyone stands often matters more than how many soldiers you brought, which makes winning against the odds very satisfying. Victories give experience, items and gold, and your hero levels up and gears up along the way.

A battle

A world you share

The world map is shared with every other player. You trade through the Market at your own prices or via the auction house, join an alliance to plan attacks and defense together, and challenge other players in the arena. Beginner protection gives new players time to settle in first.

What I care about as the developer

  • Fair play. It is free. Diamonds, the optional premium currency, only speed up queues. They never unlock exclusive units, buildings or content.
  • Play anywhere. Desktop or phone browser, no download, in English, German, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • A gentle start. A guided tutorial walks you through your first town, army and battle, and the How to Play guide covers the first days in more detail.

I would love to hear from anyone who tries it, especially about the first ten minutes: what was clear, what was confusing, and what made you want to come back.
