How do you answer questions about your salary expectation/requirements in a job application or interview?

Salary history is a related question, but I think one it's easier not to answer. With that I think you can legitimately say you don't think you can give that out, because most employers I've had have told me not to discuss salary, at least with coworkers (even though it might be illegal for them to do so).

How about "Before I answer that, can you tell me the salary range for the position?"

I haven't tried that, but it seems fair that if they are asking for numbers from you, they should be willing to give them out in return.

I usually outright say it. I may high ball just a little but then add the caveat-
"but I am willing to discuss a lower salary depending on the benefits"
It's worked well for me so far.
