I tested free AI image generators so you don't have to: what actually works in 2026

I've been building a small side project that needs a lot of visual assets (og images, product shots, blog illustrations), so I spent the last two weeks rotating through free AI image generators to see which ones are actually usable day-to-day. Here are my notes.

What I tested and what matters

My criteria were simple:

  • Does the free tier let you generate at least a few images per day?
  • How fast is generation, really?
  • Can you edit an existing image instead of generating from scratch?
  • Is the output good enough to publish without touching Photoshop?

The short version

ImgKick (imgkick.com) surprised me the most. It runs on the newer GPT Image models (2.5 and Flare), gives you 50 welcome credits plus 10 daily credits on the free tier, and supports image-to-image editing where you upload a reference and describe the changes. The interface is available in English, French, German and Polish, which is rare for a small tool. Paid plans start at $5 if you outgrow the free tier.

Stable Diffusion UIs are still the most flexible if you want to run things locally, but "free" there includes your GPU time and an afternoon of setup.

DALL·E via ChatGPT free is fine for quick drafts, but you hit the cap fast and the editing workflow is clunkier than dedicated tools.

What I actually learned

  1. For marketing assets, speed beats perfection. A tool that gives you 10 decent variations per day wins over one perfect-but-slow pipeline.
  2. Image-to-image editing (upload a reference, describe the change) is the feature that saves the most time. Text-only generators are fun but rarely give you publishable results in one shot.
  3. The quality gap between $0 and $5/month plans is smaller than you'd expect. I'd start free everywhere and only upgrade the one you end up using daily.
