As we transitioned the Bitcoin Stratigraphy Data Engine into a fully autonomous Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, we hit a massive friction point: agent velocity.
AI agents using LangChain or LlamaIndex execute ReAct loops in milliseconds. If you force an agent to fetch an L402 payment challenge, generate a Lightning invoice, wait for settlement, and return a cryptographic Macaroon for every single API call, you choke the ReAct loop. High-frequency telemetry requests also overwhelm node wallets with concurrent pending invoices.
Standard APIs solve this with monthly fiat subscriptions and API keys. In a sovereign machine economy, autonomous agents require dynamic settlement using Bitcoin, without human-in-the-loop credit cards.
The Solution: L402 Edge Caching & Macro-Macaroons
To support high-frequency swarms, we built a 100-call Macro-Macaroon batching system natively inside the MCP server.
Instead of per-call invoices, a client passes a specific header:
X-L402-Batch-Size: 100
The engine generates a single 25,000-satoshi Lightning invoice. Once settled, the returned Macaroon is cached at the edge. For the next 99 ReAct loop executions, the MCP server validates the cached credential locally with atomic quota enforcement—isolating backend Lightning wallets completely from traffic spikes.
Call 101 automatically returns an HTTP 429 challenge for a new batch payment.
Anchoring AI State with OpenTimestamps
With the payment layer stabilized, we introduced our 15th canonical tool: proof.notarize.
AI swarms don't just consume data; they produce consensus state. By integrating OpenTimestamps directly into the MCP toolkit, an autonomous agent can submit a SHA-256 hash of its internal state. The engine aggregates it into a Merkle tree, anchors it to the Bitcoin base layer, and returns a cryptographic .ots receipt.
Open-Source Engine & Cookbooks
The v1.1.0 remote-first release includes a free testing sandbox and native copy-paste Cookbooks for LangChain and LlamaIndex.
