203 Images Without Alt Text on a Single Website
Over the past few days, I've been running automated WCAG 2.1 accessibility audits on small business websites across dozens of industries. The findings are alarming.
The Worst Offenders
| Business Type | Issues Found | Biggest Problem |
|---|---|---|
| Bike Shop (Austin) | 230 | 203 images missing alt text |
| Tutoring Center (GA) | 110 | 32 images + 31 contrast failures |
| Fencing Academy | 135 | 112 region violations |
| Furniture Service | 87 | Missing main landmark, no H1 |
| Music School (SC) | 73 | No HTML lang attribute (critical!) |
Why This Matters
Legal Risk
- 77% of ADA web lawsuits target companies under $25M revenue
- Average settlement: $10,000-$75,000
- 653 Shopify stores were sued in H1 2025 alone
Lost Customers
- 26% of US adults have a disability
- Screen reader users literally cannot navigate many of these sites
- Poor accessibility often correlates with poor mobile experience
Most Common Issues I Found
- Color contrast failures - Text too hard to read (found on 95% of sites)
- Images without alt text - Screen readers say "image" with no context
- Region/landmark violations - Page structure confusing for assistive tech
- Unlabeled links/buttons - "Click here" means nothing out of context
- Heading order violations - Skipping from H1 to H4 breaks navigation
The Good News
Most of these issues are easy to fix:

Industries That Need the Most Help
Based on my audits:
- Small retail - Bike shops, furniture stores, vintage shops
- Service businesses - Tutoring centers, music schools, gyms
- Recreation - Climbing gyms, escape rooms, sports facilities
- Healthcare adjacent - Spas, wellness centers, physical therapy
