Enhance Your Writing with These Formatting Strategies. Even the most engaging writing can be overshadowed by poor formatting. On the other hand, strategic formatting enhances readability and keeps your audience engaged.
If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.
1. Pair Your Title with a Subtitle
Capture attention from the start. Titles and subtitles are crucial for making your story stand out in crowded digital spaces. They play a significant role in click-through rates on platforms like social media and search engines.
When drafting your article in Medium’s editor, follow these steps to format your subtitle: Begin by typing your main title, press enter to proceed to the next line for your subtitle, and once typed, highlight the entire subtitle text. Then, select the small “T” icon from the formatting toolbar to apply the subtitle format.
A helpful gif tutorial below demonstrates this process in action.
2. Incorporate a Kicker for Creativity
Add a unique touch with a kicker above your title for additional flair. This feature requires specific steps to activate in the Medium editor, but it can significantly enhance the visual appeal of your story’s introduction.
To apply a kicker in your Medium article, follow these steps:
Begin by typing your main title and subtitle.
Place your cursor just before the first character of your main title.
Press Enter to move your title and subtitle to the next line.
Move back to the line above and type your kicker.
Highlight the entire kicker text.
Click on the small “T” icon in the formatting options to apply the kicker formatting.

3. SEO-Optimize Your Title and Subtitle
You can customize your story’s title and subtitle for external visibility, such as on search engines or social media previews, by accessing Medium’s display title and subtitle settings. This helps improve your story’s searchability and reach.
Open Menu: Click on the “…” icon at the top right.
Edit Title: Select “Change display title/subtitle”.
Set Subtitle: Type in your desired subtitle and save.

4. Arrange Images in a Grid

6. Optimize Image Loading Times
Use a free website like

8. Embrace Drop Caps and Quotes
Use drop caps to make the first letter of a paragraph stand out and vary quote styles to highlight key insights, adding elegance and emphasis to your writing.
9. Customize Your Story Link
Tailor your story’s URL for memorability and brand consistency, making it easier for readers to find and share your content.
Open Menu: Click on the “…” icon at the top right.
Enter More Setting
Scroll down to Advanced Settings
Select Custom
Customize the story URL
10. Incorporate Code Blocks
Use code blocks to share code snippets or emphasize text, enriching your technical or instructional content.

Useful tips! I wish Medium had a better Markdown editor, though it's not as easy to import articles there or write them from scratch. It takes longer.
Thanks, Indeed i agree
