My Hacktoberfest personal challenge: I'm writing a game in 7 days! (Days 4 & 5)

Welcome back to my improvised dev journal where I'm recording the journey of working on my personal Hacktoberfest challenge.

I'm creating a game in 7 days. More specifically, a Platformer Typing game, you can read more about the idea here on my first day's journal.

This time, I'm covering 2 days together, because day 4 was a disgrace, I was too tired and only managed to check one of the goals for that day.

The plan for Day 4 (and 5)

The idea for day 4 was for me to do 3 things:

  1. Add a way for the player to traverse from one level to the next one.
  2. Create the graphics for the main character (the ninja)
  3. Create a whole new level.

By the end of a very long and tiring day, the 4th day on this challenge ended with me falling asleep in front of my computer after finishing the work needed for point #1.
You can see that in the following screnshot:

Temple entrance

That is meant to be the entrance to a temple, by the way....bare with me, I'm no graphic designer nor illustrator!

What about points 2 and 3?

Well, with the end of day 5, I'm closing points 2 and 3, although point 3 still needs a little bit of work. I managed to create the background and foreground images for the new level, but I still need to add some items, enemies and probably some collectibles.
Here are a few screenshots showing the new level and the animations for the main character, which are pretty basic, but I really love how they look.

Running
You can see him running here, I'm pretty proud of how that one turned out!

Jumping

And you can see him jumping there.

The plan for day 6

With only 2 more days left, I really need to focus on the minimum things I need to call it done, so next item on my to-do list will be:

  • Improving the actions UI. See those white arrows surrounded by the words? They're meant to indicate where will your character go after writing a correct word. I want to highlight the arrow while the player is typing, that way they'll get a better indicator of their progress. As well as probably showing something when the player misspells a word.

If I have time, I'll add the extra bonus of completing the level design and tunning the one for level1, which still needs some work.

That's it for now

It was a pretty short update, but it's really late and I wanted to get it out of the way sooner than later.

I'm really enjoying this challenge, but I can't wait to be done with it and get back to my normal schedule :)

I hope if you're reading this, you're enjoying the journey as much as I am! Leave a comment with ideas for improvements, I might pick it up in the future, with more time to work on it, who knows?!

I was talking with my colleague about this challenge and we both got excited to try!! It was a good initiative to help your son to learn how to write and read and use the computer. I learned the same way, by playing video games and computer. First game I ever played on computer was tibia hahaha good old days...
