The UV filters in your sunscreen: BASF in Germany or Chinese manufacturers without traceability?

Sunscreen is one of the most health-impactful everyday products, and one where we know least about its chemical origins. UV filters — the active ingredients that protect against radiation — have very specific manufacturers, and their geopolitical origin matters as much as their efficacy.

The global UV filter market is led by three democratic companies. BASF (Germany, EIU 8.58) is the world's largest producer of organic UV filters: Tinosorb M, Tinosorb S, Uvinul A Plus, Uvinul T 150. DSM (Netherlands, 9.01) produces Parsol and Parsol 340. Symrise (Germany, 8.58) manufactures high-purity solar active ingredients.

However, China (2.12) has developed a low-cost UV filter manufacturing industry supplying mid-to-low price sunscreen brands. These Chinese filters do not always meet the same purity and stability standards as European ones, and their traceability is minimal.

This article analyses which sunscreen brands use UV filters of democratic origin and how to read an INCI label to verify it.

The problem: opaque UV filter origins and variable stability

UV filters are divided into organic (absorb UV radiation) and inorganic (reflect it — zinc oxide, titanium dioxide). New-generation organic filters — Tinosorb, Mexoryl, Uvinul — are more effective and photostable than classic ones (avobenzone, oxybenzone), and are manufactured primarily in Europe.

The problem:

— Classic UV filters such as avobenzone and oxybenzone are mass-manufactured in China without origin declaration on the final label.

— Nano zinc oxide (ZnO nano) for mineral sunscreens is produced mainly in China (2.12) and South Korea (8.09). Nano particles still have unresolved safety questions from the EFSA.

— Some "mineral sunscreen" brands use Chinese titanium dioxide without certification of metallic contaminant absence.

European UV filter manufacturers (BASF, DSM, Symrise) hold ISO certifications, complete traceability, and independent third-party audits. When a brand declares "contains BASF Tinosorb S" in its technical sheet, there is verified democratic origin.

The democratic countries leading UV filter production

Germany (8.58) — BASF SE, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, is the world's largest producer of sunscreen ingredients. Its Tinosorb and Uvinul filters are manufactured in Germany with EU-registered patents. The most advanced active ingredient currently on the market, Tinosorb M (INCI: Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol), is exclusively German.

Netherlands (9.01) — DSM Nutritional Products (now part of dsm-firmenich) produces Parsol filters with manufacturing in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Their filters are approved by both the EU and the US FDA.

France (7.99) — L'Oréal developed Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL in its Clichy laboratories (Hauts-de-Seine). These filters are exclusive to L'Oréal group brands: La Roche-Posay, Vichy, Anthelios.

Switzerland (9.15) — Givaudan, dsm-firmenich, and other cosmetic active ingredient suppliers have certified Swiss manufacturing. The Swiss regulatory system for cosmetics is equivalent to European regulation.

How to read a sunscreen label to verify democratic origin

The INCI list on the label allows identification of the UV filters used. Democratic-origin filters include:

European high-grade filters:

— Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S) — BASF, Germany

— Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol (Tinosorb M) — BASF, Germany

— Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150) — BASF, Germany

— Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid (Mexoryl SX) — L'Oréal, France

Filters that may be of unverified Chinese origin:

— Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) — no origin indication on label

— Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) — mainly Chinese in low-price brands

— Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate) — distributed manufacturing, variable origin

Positive signals: "formulated with BASF UV filters," "contains Tinosorb," "Mexoryl technology" — these declarations indicate verifiable democratic origin.

The best options in 2026 with a democratic supply chain

La Roche-Posay Anthelios — France (7.99). Uses Mexoryl SX and XL filters, exclusive to L'Oréal. Dermatological SPF 50+ formulation. The most recommended sunscreen by European dermatologists. Price: €18–30.

ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica — Spain (8.13). Tinosorb M and S filters from BASF (Germany). Formulation with photolyases. ISDIN is a Spanish company with R&D in Barcelona. Price: €28–45.

Altruist SPF 50 — UK (8.28). Sunscreen founded by dermatologist Andrew Birnie to make high-grade filters accessible. Uses European filters at reduced price. Price: €2–4. The best democratic-origin value on the market.

Avène Sun — France (7.99). Part of Pierre Fabre, a French pharmaceutical laboratory. European filters, Avène thermal water as base. Price: €15–25.

Ultrasun — Switzerland (9.15). Sunscreens formulated in Switzerland with European-origin filters. No fragrances, no preservatives, no allergens. Price: €20–35.

Bondi Sands SPF 50 — Australia (8.86). Australia's largest brand uses European filters in its premium formulations. Price: €12–18.

The sun is universal — the origin of your protection is not

Every summer, millions of Europeans apply sunscreen without knowing that the UV filter in that tube might come from a BASF laboratory in Ludwigshafen (Germany, 8.58) or from a chemical plant in Shanghai (China, 2.12). The difference is not only political: new-generation European filters like Tinosorb have better photostability and safety profiles than the predominantly Chinese classic filters.

Democratic sunscreen exists, works better, and in some cases (Altruist) costs less than opaque alternatives. There is no excuse.
