Calling the Class of 2020: Join DEV + GitHub for Graduation

Around this time of year, students across the world are typically celebrating the closing of a chapter — whether that’s from grade school, college, grad school, or anything in between and beyond. It’s a time of pride, reflection, and camaraderie amongst fellow graduates as they take the next step of their journey.

Because the pandemic has led to mass-cancellations of in-person graduation ceremonies and showcases, we're teaming up with GitHub for a community-wide celebration! On Monday, June 15th, we’ll be featuring final projects from the Class of 2020 all over the DEV platform and throughout our social channels. Additionally, GitHub is organizing a Class of 2020 Year Book and hosting a livestream graduation ceremony at 9:00 AM PDT, where they’ll highlight some of your projects shared on DEV. All year book participants will also get swag delivered straight to their door!

How To Participate

Step One: Share Your Projects

To qualify for extra swag, we’re asking graduates to go the extra mile and share their final projects or thesis with the community.

  • Use our graduation template to write your post.
  • You’ll see some prompts that are meant to get your ideas going, so please feel free to write everything in your own style! Be sure to include the #devgrad2020 and #octograd2020 tags.

Step Two: Submit Your PR

Once you’ve published your post, you’re ready to submit a PR to the Class of 2020 Year Book.

  • Visit the Class of 2020 Repository
  • Submit a PR with your name, school, photo, favorite quote, DEV post link, and GitHub username. Be sure to go through the entire PR checklist!
  • Fill out the swag shipment form.
  • Done!

Swag has 🎉 shipped 🎉 !!

If you are located in the United States, you will likely receive something in the next week. International shipments will arrive in 2-3 weeks. If your country is not currently accepting international shipments, we will hold onto your swag until shipping restrictions have been lifted. Please be patient as shipping in many parts of the world is currently delayed. 🙌.

Feel free to flex your swag on Twitter and tag us!

Today this repository will be archived.

Congrats grads ✨

A few updates -

  • 📚 Yearbook is LIVE. Find your friends and enjoy the quotes. We sure did 😅
  • 🛍 Swag has…

Submission Deadline: Before midnight Monday, May 25th PDT Friday May 22 at 3pm PDT. Due to a high volume of PRs, we need to close submissions early.

Bonus Step: Share The Love!

  • Share this post with the people in your life who are graduating 💌
  • Mark your calendars and come back on June 15th 🗓
  • Show your support by checking out projects and sending the Class of 2020 some love (comments, hearts, and unicorns are all super welcome). 🦄

I'm so glad about organizing this event and collaborating with DEV! Even if we are staying home, it doesn't mean we can't celebrate together🎉.

I wish this online graduation ceremony allows students to celebrate their end-of-course achievements in these unusual circumstances while keeping everyone safe. We are working hard to make this an excellent experience for everyone!✨

This is going to be an amazing experience i am sure.
Sad we didn't receive any farewell for our graduation, but you people are nailing it for all the graduates :)
Can't wait for the ceremony :D

Congratulations to all of the graduates! I hope you're able to use this celebration as an opportunity to truly feel proud of your own accomplishments, and to connect with other community members who are in a very similar transition phase in their lives and careers.

Could it be a hackathon project that I worked while I was a student? :)

Yes! Hackathon projects are welcomed for submission.

So I'm assuming this is only for college and university grads, correct? Asking because I'm graduating high school.

High School graduates can join as well 🎉

Ok, awesome! One last question, can I just submit any project I've been working on since my high school
doesn't have a computer science class? It says above to submit your final project/thesis.

This is really nice initiative from Github. As a 2020 graduate, I really like the idea and good way to meet other graduates.

Github received a lot of negative feedback for abruptly closing submissions prematurely without any warning about max capacities or early closure. They promptly took notice and addressed the situation with an apology and reopened submissions to the originally provided deadline of May 25, 2020. They are actively receiving all community requests for the event and all Tier 1 requests will be honored byGithub. Only the DEV sponsored Tier 2 and Tier 3 portions are not resuming with the originally provided deadline of May 25, 2020 and are currently withdrawn from the event for anyone from the community attempting to participate as of the time the original unexpected event closure notice was given. Please properly update this post with the correct information so that community members can still participate with Github at least for the event.

I'm glad something that awesome is being done. Honestly, we needed all these hackathons and interactions happening online :D

I wrote a post about a project I did that I was planning to keep hidden in a drawer. But I thought it would be interesting to some. It is about realtime face recognition on android. If you're interested, I'd love that you take a look, here's the post

Umm Hello :D

Sorry I don't know where should I ask about this question, but how can inquire about the status of my graduation swag shipment?
