Evaluating Niche Instagram Hashtags Using Python

It was 9:30 AM on a Tuesday, and I was staring at a terminal full of rate-limit warnings. I was trying to run an audit on a list of photography creators to see which niche hashtags correlate with high reach, but my local scraping script stalled after ten requests.

The Overhead of Headless Extraction

When analyzing content distribution patterns, public account metrics tell you whether a hashtag cluster actually drives engagement or simply attracts bot comments. Historically, getting this profile data meant writing browser automation routines with Playwright, rotating residential proxies, and constantly patching session handlers every time login checkpoints appeared.

Bypassing browser automation in favor of a direct REST infrastructure completely eliminates headless session management, IP banning risks, and selector maintenance.

Querying Profile Data via REST API

To keep the hashtag evaluation pipeline reliable, I switched the extraction step to HikerAPI. Instead of orchestrating browser sessions, you send an HTTP request with an authorization key and receive clean JSON data back.

Here is the Python script used to fetch target account metrics:

Python

import requests
headers = {"x-access-key": "YOUR_KEY"}
r = requests.get("https://api.hikerapi.com/v2/user/by/username", params={"username": "natgeo"}, headers=headers)
print(r.json())
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Parsing Metrics for Hashtag Benchmarks

The response payload returns standard user metadata, including user ID (pk), follower count, post counts, and bio links. From here, the pipeline passes the user_id into media endpoints to extract the latest caption tokens, isolate specific hashtags, and calculate median likes and comments per post.

Running this through a standard script takes under two seconds per profile and requires zero proxy maintenance.

Conclusion

For recurring research tasks where data consistency matters more than writing scraping boilerplate, querying a structured REST endpoint saves hours of weekly maintenance. The audit pipeline now runs automatically without breaking on account verification walls.
