๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป Everything you need to know about Hacktoberfest 2023 (and what's happening with the free tee shirts?) โžก๏ธ

Hey friends ๐Ÿ‘‹

The open-source holidays are just around the corner!

With this in mind, we have been cooking something pretty cool at quira.sh that many of you will be happy to hear about. We will release this at the start of Hacktoberfest! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Whether this is your first or 10th Hacktoberfest rodeo, let's look into the 2023 edition! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ

๐ŸŽ’ What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long challenge happening every year in October.

The goal is to invite people to make contributions to open-source.

It invites both coders and non-coders to make a minimum of 4 contributions and receive cool rewards. ๐ŸŽ

This year is special as it celebrates its 10th anniversary!

๐Ÿ‘พ How to participate?

  • Register on https://hacktoberfest.com/ anytime between September 26 and October 31
  • Contributions (known as Pull requests or PRs) can be made in either GitHub or GitLab โ†’ to find cool projects to contribute to, you can use the free โ€œContributeโ€ tool on quira.sh. (click on Contribute after signing up).

Special tip: If you never contributed or you are looking to make your first Hacktoberfest contribution, you can contribute in less than 10 min here.

๐Ÿ† Prizes

Prizes are a key component of the challenge.

This year's rule remains the same: have 4 successful contributions and you are eligible for cool prizes.

However, the 2023 edition has... no t-shirts ๐Ÿ˜ญ

They explained that the logistics for this are becoming increasingly difficult as the event gets bigger.

However, you will still receive some cool presents!

In this edition, you will receive a digital reward kit and the first 50,000 participants to have their first PR accepted will have a tree planted in their name through Tree Nation (thatโ€™s pretty neat ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒŽ).

๐Ÿ‘พ Low-code & no-code

This year, there is a full website section focused on Low-code and no-code!

This means there is a growing interest in having low-code/non-code join the movement ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Hereโ€™s their list of what would be considered valuable contributions and what you could possibly do in October:

Image description

I think starting with low-code or even no-code contributions is an essential part of getting into the ecosystem. In this, I am super happy to see that this year we speak more about this.

If you are interested in this, here's a really cool article on the mechanics behind contributing towards documentation!

You can also read about GitHubโ€™s ReadMe Project here.

๐Ÿ“š The Rules you need to know about

  • Pull Requests to your own account do count, even if it is on the same repository.
  • Contributions need to be done in a project with the hacktoberfest topic opt-in. If you make a PR to a non-Hacktoberfest repo, you can kindly ask the maintainer to add the hacktoberfest-accepted label.

Image description

  • To claim your reward, you will receive a notification in your Hacktoberfest profile.
  • Your PR/MRs must be created between October 1 and October 31 (in any time zone, UTC-12 thru UTC+14).

Now that you know everything about this year's edition, we can't wait to let you in on our release for this Hacktoberfest (keep an eye out ๐Ÿ‘€).

You can keep this article as a condensed guide as well as use the various resources to make your first contributions for Hacktoberfest!

In this, I strongly advise you to save and share it with your friends who are also interested in participating.

Remember, not only is it fun to participate and you can win cool gifts, this is also a great opportunity to increase your skills and gain relevant experience (something you could showcase to future employers). ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ”ฅ

I hope this brought you some value and wish you a kickass start to Hacktoberfest ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‘พ

Your dev.to buddy,

Bap

Perhaps the lack of t-shirts will help cut down on spam PRs. E.g., someone who truly wants to use Hacktoberfest to get (more) involved in open source will probably do so with or without a t-shirt as a prize.

That's a very good point. ๐Ÿ‘ They also mentioned they were doing this for environmental reasons explaining why they went for a tree donation instead.
