The "Job Offer"
It started like any other Tuesday. I received an email from a "Recruiter" named Marko. He claimed he wanted to hire me, but the conversation quickly shifted to the infamous "Upwork Account Renting" scam.
Instead of blocking him, I decided to test my social engineering skills. 😈
The Bait
I spun up a virtual machine and played the role of a naive beginner with a "broken laptop" and a very strict mother. I wasted his time for 2 hours, making him beg me to plug in my charger.
But I had one condition before installing his remote access tool (AnyDesk)...
He had to apologize to my cat, Simba, for being rude.
The Kali Linux Reveal
After he humiliated himself for the "job," I dropped the act.
I revealed that I wasn't a helpless user, but a developer running Kali Linux. I had logged his IP, his location, and screenshotted the entire chat.
Watch the full disaster unfold here (7 mins):
Takeaway for Devs
- Never rent your accounts: It's against TOS and helps scammers harm others.
- Check the "Recruiter": If they ask for AnyDesk/TeamViewer instantly, it's a trap.
- Waste their time: If you can safely do it, every minute they spend with you is a minute they aren't scamming someone else!
Let me know what you think of his "apology" in the comments!
