Meta AI just crossed a billion monthly users.
It's free, embedded in Instagram/WhatsApp/Facebook/Messenger, and generates images through Imagine.
For developers and builders, though, the limitations are structural:
No persistent memory — context doesn't carry between sessions.
No document analysis — can't process PDFs, spreadsheets, or code files.
No external integrations — walled garden. Can't interact with anything outside Meta's ecosystem.
No assistant API — Llama models are available for self-hosting, but the Meta AI assistant itself has no API for workflow integration.
The Avocado situation: Meta's next frontier model was delayed from March to at least May 2026. Internal tests showed it between Gemini 2.5 and 3.0 — short of the frontier target.
On LiveCodeBench, Llama 4 Maverick scores 40% vs. 85% for GPT-5.
The one real use case is for Meta advertisers — the Business Assistant plugs directly into Meta's ad tools with strong early metrics.
For everyone building a dev workflow or content stack: watch it, don't build on it.
