Amazon has increased the prices of several popular devices, and some of them now cost up to 60% more.
The price changes affect products such as Echo speakers, Kindle e-readers, Fire TV devices, and eero Wi-Fi systems. Amazon says the main reason behind the increases is the rising cost of memory and storage components.
The Echo Dot has seen the biggest jump, going from $49.99 to $79.99. The basic Kindle has gone from $109.99 to $149.99, while the Kindle Paperwhite now costs $199.99.
One reason behind the rising costs is the growing demand for memory used in AI data centres. As AI companies use more high-performance memory, the supply available for everyday electronics is becoming tighter.
Amazon says it had been absorbing these higher costs for some time but has now passed some of them on to customers.
Amazon is not the only company facing this issue. Other major technology companies, including Apple, Dell, and Microsoft's Xbox business, are also dealing with higher component costs.
If memory prices continue to stay high, more electronic products could become expensive. However, Amazon may still offer discounts during major sales, so the final price customers pay could be lower than the new listed price.
The bigger takeaway is that the rapid growth of AI is starting to affect everyday technology too. Even products such as smart speakers and e-readers can become more expensive when the cost of the components inside them goes up.
