Apple Changes EU App Store Fees and Opens More Doors to Alternative Stores

Apple is changing its App Store rules in the European Union, giving developers more freedom in how they distribute apps and handle payments.

One of the biggest changes is the replacement of the per-install Core Technology Fee with a 5% commission on qualifying sales made through alternative app stores or developer websites.

Under the new EU terms, Apple's commission on purchases through its In-App Purchase system will be 26% instead of the usual 30%.

Some developers may also qualify for lower rates.

Developers in the EU can continue distributing eligible apps through alternative marketplaces or directly from their websites, while Apple's basic security checks will still apply.

Apple says the changes are part of its work to meet the EU's Digital Markets Act after discussions with the European Commission.

The new rules are set to take effect on October 1, 2026, and could make Apple's fee system easier for developers to understand.

For iPhone and iPad users, this could mean more ways to get apps and pay for digital services.
