Meta Faces Major Trial Over Claims Instagram and Facebook Harm Young Users

Meta is facing a major legal battle over how Instagram and Facebook are designed for children and teenagers.

Several U.S. states claim that some of Meta’s features may encourage young users to spend more time on its platforms while not doing enough to protect their data.

The lawsuit focuses on features such as endless feeds, notifications, and content recommendations.

Regulators say these features can encourage teenagers to keep coming back and spending more time on the apps.

The states also accuse Meta of collecting data from some children under 13 without the parental permission required under U.S. law.

Meta denies the claims. The company says it has introduced safety tools, privacy settings, parental controls, and other features aimed at protecting young users.

The case could eventually lead to changes in how Instagram and Facebook recommend content, handle children's data, verify ages, and keep younger users engaged.

The trial involves 29 state attorneys general, making it a case that could have an impact beyond Meta.

Its outcome may also push other social media companies to rethink how their platforms are designed for children.
