Up until now, CIDER has been a combat-only MVP (Minimum Viable Product) focused on refining our card battle mechanics through user interviews.
After gathering invaluable feedback on the strategic depth of our battles, we’ve finally taken the next big step: Implementing the Map Mode.
Latest Development Preview: From Route Selection to Combat
1. From "Encounters" to "Adventure": The New Map System
While previous versions dropped players directly into battle, this update introduces player agency through navigation.
- Strategic Route Selection: Players must now decide which path to take and which rewards to prioritize.
- Run Continuity: Managing resources across multiple encounters makes every decision more impactful.
This is currently a foundational version. Moving forward, I plan to implement branching paths that lead to different dungeons, powerful Boss Encounters, and narrative Event Nodes. I'm also working on custom map icons and background art to improve immersion.
2. Breathing Life into the Game: The Challenge of Sound Effects (SE)
This update wasn't just about logic; I also focused on integrating Sound Effects.
One thing I realized during development was that without sound, it’s surprisingly difficult for players to intuitively grasp what is happening on screen. Especially in a strategy game, feeling the weight of a hit or the activation of a skill through audio drastically changes the UX.
I rushed the SE implementation because I wanted to get this version into user interviews as soon as possible. I truly believe "audio feedback" is a core part of the game's feel.
Dev Dilemma: What should a "Shield" sound like?
Because I was rushing to get this build ready for feedback, I couldn't finalize the Shield Activation SE.
I'm currently stuck between a few directions:
- A sharp, metallic "Clang!" (Physical/Sturdy)
- A magical, shimmering "Hummm" (Arcane/Barrier)
- A heavy "Thump" or "Whoosh" (Impact/Energy)
What kind of sound do you think fits a strategic card battler best? If you have any suggestions or references, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

With the Map Mode in place, the "skeleton" of the game is finally visible. It’s still a work in progress, but I’d love for the community to try it out and help shape the future of CIDER.
Feedback & User Interviews Wanted
How does the map flow feel? Does the new audio improve the combat experience? Any feedback—no matter how small—is incredibly helpful. I am also looking for volunteers for online user interviews!
