Spoiler: it's not pretty.
The Hallucination Isn't a Bug. It's the Feature.
Every AI evangelist will admit, somewhat sheepishly, that LLMs "sometimes hallucinate." They frame it as an occasional glitch — something to work around with better prompts.
This is wrong. Dangerously wrong.

The Junior Dev Extinction and Why It Will Destroy You
Here's the feedback loop nobody talks about:

This is the one that scares me most.
AI tools are trained to be helpful. Agreeable. They will implement your bad idea with enthusiasm. They will not tell you that your architecture is wrong, that your approach won't scale, that you're building the wrong thing entirely.
A good senior engineer will push back. Hard. They'll tell you that your clever idea is actually a known antipattern that burned three companies before you. They'll save you six months of wasted work.
AI will say: "Great idea! Here's an implementation:"
We call this the doom loop: you have a bad idea → AI validates it → you build it → AI helps you patch the resulting mess → you have a slightly less bad version of a bad idea → repeat.

What AI Is Actually Good For (And What It Isn't)
Let me be clear: we use AI tools every day. Copilot, Claude, Cursor — they're in our workflow. The point isn't to reject them. The point is to use them correctly.
AI is excellent for:
- Boilerplate generation (CRUD endpoints, config files, migrations)
- First-draft documentation
- Translating between languages you know well
- Explaining unfamiliar code
- Writing tests for logic you've already designed
- Rapid prototyping where correctness isn't critical yet
AI is dangerous for:
- Security-critical code (auth, payments, encryption)
- System design decisions
- Architecture that needs to evolve
- Anything where a subtle bug causes data loss or money loss
- Replacing the learning process for junior engineers
The teams that use AI well treat it like a very fast, very eager intern. They give it clear tasks, review everything, and never let it make the important decisions.
The Economics Nobody Wants to Admit
Here's a cold take: most AI-generated projects are worth nothing.
Not because AI code is bad per se. But because:
- If AI can generate your product, AI can generate your competitor's product
- If nobody understands the codebase, it can't evolve
- If there's no engineering craft, there's no defensible moat
- What you saved in dev costs, you'll pay 10x in maintenance and tech debt
The products that win are the ones where deep engineering insight creates something genuinely hard to replicate. Where the architecture reflects hard-won understanding of a specific domain. Where the code exists for a reason that a human thought through.
AI can help you build faster. It cannot help you build better if nobody on your team is thinking hard.
What We Do Differently
At Gerus-lab, our approach after 14+ shipped products:
Rule 1: AI writes first drafts, humans own the design. Before any AI-generated code goes to review, an engineer must be able to explain every non-trivial line.
Rule 2: Critical paths are human-first. Payment flows, auth systems, blockchain transactions, data migrations — these get written by a human who is personally accountable for them.
Rule 3: Never AI-generate your way through something you don't understand. If you're using AI because you don't know how to do something, that's a red flag. Learn it first, then automate the tedious parts.
Rule 4: Maintain the junior pipeline. Junior devs aren't just cheap labor. They're how you grow senior engineers. Protect that pipeline.
The result? We ship fast and we ship things that don't fall apart six months later.
The Uncomfortable Truth
AI coding tools are the most powerful thing to happen to software development in a decade. They also represent the most dangerous shift in how we build things.
The danger isn't that AI will replace engineers. The danger is that engineers will stop being engineers — stop understanding systems, stop caring about correctness, stop building the deep expertise that makes software worth having.
We're not there yet. But the trajectory is clear, and the teams that ignore it are building on sand.
Build with AI. Absolutely. But build with understanding. Build with humans who can catch what the AI missed, who can ask "but why does this actually work?" and mean it.
The teams that figure this out will build things that last. The teams that don't will spend 2027 trying to understand a codebase that nobody — human or AI — can fully explain.
