I Built a Pomodoro Timer That Actually Helps You Focus — With Rainy Cafe Ambience

Stillscape is a free online Pomodoro timer wrapped in a rainy cafe scene that breathes with your focus. No login, no download, no subscription.

The Problem With Most Pomodoro Timers

You've been there. You open a new tab, search "pomodoro timer," and pick one. What happens?

  • It's a blank white page with a ticking number
  • The ticking sound makes you anxious
  • You forget to log your tasks
  • After 25 minutes you're on Twitter anyway

The Pomodoro Technique works — but most implementations are boring. They don't create the environment you need to actually stay focused.

What I Built

still.sendafun.com is a focus room, not just a timer.

It's a rainy cafe window on your screen. The rain falls. The coffee shop hums softly. And the timer ticks along with you.

What's inside:

🌧️ 16+ ambient sounds — rain, thunder, fireplace, forest, ocean, cafe, wind, white/brown/pink noise, and more

🎨 Visual scene that breathes — the rainy window isn't just decoration. It subtly changes as your focus session progresses.

Task list built in — add your tasks, check them off as you go. No separate todo app needed.

📊 Stats and history — track how many focused sessions you actually complete each day.

🔔 Desktop notifications — get notified when your break starts, even if you're in another tab.

🎯 Preset scenes — one tap to switch between "Deep Focus," "Writing Mode," "Rainy Day," "Sleep Sound," and more.

The Tech Stack

Built as a lightweight web app:

Layer Tech Why
Frontend Vanilla JS + Web Audio API No framework overhead, instant load
Hosting Cloudflare Pages Global CDN, free tier, instant deploys
Audio Web Audio API + AudioContext Layered sounds, crossfade, no third-party players
Visuals CSS animations + canvas Rain particles, flickering candle, dynamic lighting
Data LocalStorage Your tasks and stats never leave your device

The Audio Part

This is the trickiest part. Most ambient sound websites play a single looping MP3. That gets annoying fast — you hear the loop point after 3 minutes.

I used the Web Audio API to layer multiple sound sources and crossfade them:

  • Rain (white noise filtered)
  • Cafe ambience (crowd murmur)
  • Fireplace (crackle)
  • Thunder (occasional rumbles)

Each layer has its own gain node, so you can mix them like a soundboard. Want more rain, less cafe? Slide the fader.

Why No Login?

Same reason as my other tools: this is a utility, not a social network.

You don't need an account to focus. You don't need to connect your calendar. You just open the tab and start working.

Your task list and stats stay in your browser's LocalStorage. Nothing gets sent to a server. Private by design.

Who Is This For?

  • Remote workers — make your home office feel like a cafe
  • Students — study with rain sounds instead of silence
  • Writers — deep focus sessions without distraction
  • ADHD brains — the ambient noise actually helps you concentrate

Try It

👉 still.sendafun.com

Open it. Put on headphones. Start a 25-minute session. See if you actually stay focused.
