OpenAI is rolling out a chat-locking feature in ChatGPT to help users hide sensitive threads on shared devices, utilizing PINs or mobile biometrics and removing locked items from standard search and lists.
Locked chats are located in the Projects > Locked chats section of the ChatGPT sidebar. To open them, you need a four-digit PIN that you set. On mobile devices, you can also use facial recognition or fingerprint recognition. You lock or unlock a chat from the menu with the three dots inside it.
The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts. According to OpenAI, it may not be available to all eligible accounts yet.
What does it protect and what does it not?
Locking hides conversations from the usual places where someone using the device might find them. However, it does not prevent OpenAI from accessing their content. The company can also use the conversations to train its models when the “Improve the model for everyone” setting is active. So locking doesn’t mean that only the user can read the content.

Locking does not remove information that ChatGPT already remembered before a conversation was locked. It also does not override workplace rules, security requirements, or legal and regulatory obligations that apply to the account.
When ChatGPT memory is active, locked conversations have their own memory, shared between them. New messages in them can update this memory, but not the user's regular memory. Temporary conversations cannot be locked.
If the user forgets the PIN and resets it, OpenAI will permanently delete all locked conversations, files, and other content protected by the feature. If they know the PIN they are using, they can change it without losing this information.
