How 19-year-old Zach Yadegari built and sold Cal AI for $30 million

Zach Yadegari, the founder of the 2024 calorie-tracking application Cal AI, has announced the acquisition of his firm by MyFitness following significant market growth.

He is now leading Persona, a startup developing AI-driven digital assistants capable of interfacing with email, messaging, and voice platforms.

The project has raised $10 million in funding as of late 2026 and aims to integrate its software across a series of connected consumer devices.

The secret to Cal AI's success

The app’s success was based on a specific social media promotion strategy. It all started when a post by an influencer brought a thousand new users to the app in just two days. Seeing the result, the company partnered with dozens of influencers, paying them based on the number of users they converted into customers. The company primarily targeted college students, asking them to post content until they reached specific user acquisition goals.

The next step with Persona

Yadegari has already started a new company, Persona, which builds artificial intelligence digital assistants. By October 2026, the company had raised $10 million in funding.

Persona aims to offer a digital assistant that can handle users' email, text messages and phone calls, and its founder plans to develop a series of devices that will connect to the company's software.

Most of these stories skip how they got the first thousand users. Did he say whether it was paid ads or creators doing the work early on?
