Law 5350/2026 establishes social media access limits in Greece taking effect January 1, 2027, requiring platforms to verify user age across new registrations and existing accounts.

Government talks with major tech platforms explore technical verification mechanisms like the Wallet to preserve privacy.

According to Law 5350/2026, the limit is calculated based on the calendar year, which means that for 2027, children born in 2013 or later are excluded. The government clarifies that simply declaring a date of birth by the user is not enough and asks platforms to check not only new registrations but also existing accounts, including those where a false age has been declared. At the same time, companies must ensure the protection of personal data and provide for correction procedures for any incorrect exclusions of users.

For verification, the Greek authorities presented the digital wallets Kids Wallet and Gov.gr Wallet, which confirm that the user meets the age limit without revealing the name or exact date of birth. Their use is not mandatory, however, as platforms can choose different technologies, as long as they prove their effectiveness. In early December, companies are invited to present comprehensive plans, appoint a responsible senior executive and participate in technical working groups together with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the National Telecommunications and Post Commission.
