Rivian's electric cars will get more advanced artificial intelligence

Rivian plans to integrate third-party AI agents from labs like Anthropic into its vehicles, coupling custom in-house routing frameworks with external models.

Rivian has developed its own software for its cars from scratch, avoiding off-the-shelf solutions. It also has an internal mechanism that understands drivers' voice commands and routes them to the right place in the system.

How voice assistance works today

So far, drivers can use their voice for basic functions such as adjusting the temperature, heating the seats or getting a news summary. Since last May, the system has also gained access to external applications such as Google Calendar.

According to the company, the internal mechanism works like a traffic control. That is, it decides whether a question will be answered locally by the car itself or whether it will be sent remotely, depending on how complex it is.

The next step and security restrictions

Integrating products from third-party AI companies requires significant preparation and collaboration, but Rivian has made it clear that these systems will never take control of key safety features like brakes or steering.

The advent of these apps is expected to connect the car with data collected by users on other devices. Scaringe cited the ability to request that someone turn on the air-conditioned seats and simultaneously schedule a meal based on a conversation that had taken place on another device as an example.

Rivian has not yet announced exactly when these changes will be implemented, referring interested parties to a special event on artificial intelligence scheduled for December.
