A technical breakdown of the iPhone 18 Pro camera system, featuring identical performance across 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes, a 24mm f/1.48 primary lens with variable aperture support, Quad Bayer 48MP sensors, and up to 40x digital zoom capabilities.
The new camera features
The main camera features a 24mm lens that is about 50% brighter than its predecessor and supports variable aperture. Each camera has a high-resolution 48-megapixel sensor.
The phone supports digital zoom up to 40x, while the image remains clear without loss up to about 8x. When the user uses digital zoom between the lenses, the resolution is automatically adjusted according to the distance. In addition, there is the ability to combine two different shots into one final high-quality photo.
Image effects and editing
New built-in photo styles add effects that mimic film texture, lighting, and soft skin tones. These effects only work in photo formats like JPG and HEIF and are not compatible with ProRaw.
The image reference feature saves an original, unaltered version of the photo along with an editable one, although it only works with the main camera.
Video download and save
The device can record high-resolution video with all lenses, while the main camera supports double the frame rate. Professional high-quality video formats can be stored either directly on the phone's internal storage with data separation or on an external USB-C hard drive for greater flexibility.
Is the upgrade worth it?
Those upgrading from an iPhone 13 or older will notice a huge difference in performance. On the other hand, iPhone 17 Pro owners can ignore this generation unless they absolutely want the new photography features and new picture styles.
