The U.S.
Department of Homeland Security ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and third-party services built on its technology from government systems, citing national security concerns and data access risks.
The ban does not just apply to DeepSeek's own tools, but also extends to third-party products and services that rely on its technology, although services can request exemptions. US authorities are concerned that government user data could be accessible to Chinese authorities due to Chinese law.
China's reaction and previous restrictions
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the country opposes efforts to overstate the concept of national security and politicize technology and trade. As early as December 2025, a law was passed restricting the use of technology in national security and intelligence systems.
The accusations of using American systems
In a report published in September, the United States accused DeepSeek and five other Chinese AI companies of trying to extract information from American systems. OpenAI told U.S. lawmakers that it had observed suspicious data extraction efforts, while Anthropic said it had detected unauthorized actions by DeepSeek and other Chinese labs to harvest results from its system.
