US grants $85 million to Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems secured an $85M US government funding agreement via the CHIPS Act to develop advanced power electronics, radiofrequency generators, radiation-resistant controls, and adapted AI hardware for nuclear fusion systems.

Where will the money be used?

The funding is aimed at developing advanced chips and components essential for nuclear fusion technology. The company plans to launch its reactor, called Sparc, sometime next year.

The funds will be distributed across five different initiatives. These include:

  • The development of power electronics to manage high voltages, which drive the magnets that confine the plasma inside the reactor.
  • The development of new generation generators for heating fusion fuel.
  • The creation of advanced electronic systems for faster control and radiation resistance.
  • The adaptation of specialized artificial intelligence hardware, such as graphics processing units, for use in future power plants.
