Walmart will allow artificial intelligence programs to shop for customers

Walmart is introducing the Agent Gateway and Agent Profiles in November, allowing AI agents to manage accounts and make purchases on behalf of users.

The architecture provides product recommendations without exposing full user purchase histories, restricts access to payment card details, and enforces spending limits.

Unlike Amazon, which is banning similar tools from its services, Walmart is taking a different path. The changes are expected to appear in customers' accounts by the end of November, with no exact date set.

How will the markets work?

To help customers control purchases, the company will launch a new tool called Agent Profiles in November. This tool will keep program purchases separate from a user's personal purchases.

Users will be able to set spending limits and decide how purchases are approved. Purchase approval will be enabled by default for all transactions.

New technologies and data protection

Walmart is also preparing a new technology, Agent Gateway, designed specifically to serve AI programs. This system will allow the program to make product recommendations without sharing the customer's broader purchase history.

New rules of use

The company updates its terms of use and privacy policy.

The new rules prohibit programs from changing payment card details and ensure that they only have access to the information necessary for each task. All relevant technologies must comply with these rules or they will be blocked from the site.
