Why does the clock app on iPhone suddenly stop at 4:39?

An investigation into a viral iPhone Clock app quirk reveals that rapid scrolling through alarm settings consistently stops at 4:39 or 16:39.

Apple has not officially commented on the behavior, leaving developers and users discussing potential software explanations.

This strange feature went viral in mid-2025. Apple has not given any official explanation as to why this is happening, while various opinions are heard from users online.

The clock app has other features, however. Its icon on the home screen is not static, but shows the current time with a moving second hand, a feature that has been around since iOS 7. If you enable low power mode on devices with iOS 26.1 or later, the movement of this hand changes and becomes fractional per second.

Timer and use on the bedside table

If you open the stopwatch within the app and slide your finger across the screen, you can change its appearance between digital and analog.

If you connect your iPhone to a charger and place it horizontally, a special display mode is activated that shows clocks, photos or small information. Night mode adapts to dark environments by displaying a bright red tone. To keep a clock permanently visible next to the bed, the relevant setting needs to be enabled on the screen, while use is best supported when the phone is placed on a magnetic charger.
