Why flat network cables often lag behind round ones

An overview of why standard round Ethernet cables outperform flat alternatives in home networking, covering twisted pair layouts, shielding, electrical resistance, and signal integrity.

In classic round cables, the inner wires are twisted in pairs so that one does not affect the other's signal. In flat cables, these pairs are placed next to each other in a straight line, making them more vulnerable to interference. In addition, round cables often have additional protection against interference from external devices, which flat cables usually do not have.

To stay thin, flat cables use thinner internal wires. This increases electrical resistance and can weaken the signal over longer distances. At the same time, because of their thin construction, they are more fragile and easily damaged when bent, pushed under doors, or stepped on.

If you need maximum reliability, round cables are a better choice. However, flat cables can work well over short distances where they don't need to be bent too much, especially in rental spaces or tight spaces.
