Why it's beneficial to limit the game's frame rate even with a powerful computer

Explore how capping in-game frame rates and pairing system-wide limits with V-Sync helps maintain stable performance, reduce GPU load, and prevent screen tearing across different hardware setups.

Frame throttling can help stabilize performance and reduce the strain on your graphics card. Image tearing occurs when your graphics card sends a new frame while the monitor is still displaying the previous image. System-wide frame throttling can help stop this phenomenon when combined with classic synchronous image synchronization.

When does restriction help?

This setting is especially useful if you are using a monitor with a variable refresh rate. These monitors typically have an effective operating range that starts at 48 frames and goes up to the maximum of the monitor.

Traditional frame synchronization limits frames to a number that does not exceed the maximum refresh rate of the display, forcing the graphics card to wait for the refresh cycle to complete. This wait adds inevitable latency to the response, which varies depending on the refresh rate, reaching 16,7 milliseconds at 60Hz, 8,33 at 120Hz, and 4,17 at 240Hz. Some newer features attempt to reduce this latency by allowing the card to continue drawing frames without waiting for the entire refresh cycle.

How to set a frame limit

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, you can limit the frames using the company's official application, the control panel, or special third-party programs such as RTSS RivaTuner. If you have an AMD card, you can do it through the AMD Adrenalin software by going to the gaming section and selecting the relevant settings.

Which price to choose?

A good option is to set the limit three or four frames below your monitor's maximum refresh rate. For example, if you have a 60Hz monitor, you can aim for 57 frames, for a 120Hz monitor, 117, and for a 240Hz monitor, 237.
