47 checks were green. Checkout had been dead for 6 hours. Here's the only metric that would have caught it.

Your store's checkout can be dead and your dashboard will still show all green. It happened to us: 47 uptime checks green, revenue at zero for 6 hours. Nobody noticed because nobody was watching the one metric that pays the bills.

If you run a small product business and you only have time to add ONE monitor, don't monitor uptime. Monitor this instead.

The only 3 numbers that matter

1. Revenue heartbeat (every 15 min). A single script hits your payment provider's API and compares "sales today" against a rolling baseline. If sales go flat while traffic doesn't, checkout is dead. This catches what 47 uptime checks can't, because it tests the money path, not the ping path.

2. Checkout end-to-end probe (every hour). Load your product page and confirm the buy button and price render. Cheap to run, and it catches the "silent 404" — the permalink someone changed last week without telling anyone.

3. Funnel drop-off (daily). Visits, then purchases, as a ratio. If you have 500 visits and 0 sales for a week, your problem is not monitoring — it's the offer, the price, or the page. Different problem, different fix.

What we learned from 6 hours of silence

  • Uptime and revenue are different animals. Uptime says the server breathes. Revenue says the cash machine spits.
  • Alert on absence, not just errors. No sales in N hours is itself an alert — errors optional.
  • Every monitor must have a runbook entry. A monitor that fires with no written fix just becomes anxiety with a timestamp.

The 20-line version

You don't need APM. A cron job, one API token, and a threshold check. If it fits in 20 lines of Python it will actually run — big monitoring stacks get abandoned precisely because they need a part-time admin.

The pattern I use (baseline compare, absence alerts, ledger state) is written up as fill-in-the-blanks templates in the Ops Starter Kit — includes the revenue heartbeat script skeleton and the incident forms that pair with it. If you're automating more of your solo/small operation, the Automation Starter Pack covers picking what to automate first without burning your weekend.

Use code LAUNCH50 for 50% off the starter kits this week.
